Job Duties:
General worker needed to perform various duties associated with the production of burley/perique tobacco. This may include field and/or greenhouse prep, cultivating, preparing rows for planting, planting, fertilizing/chemicals, harvesting by hand or machine, cutting full burley tobacco stalks using a handheld burley knife, spraying, irrigating, load/unloading of tobacco stalks, delivery of product to market, and/or driving of farm equipment. Use a precision seeder for seeding of tobacco seeds in trays (trays will ultimately be placed by hand carefully in bays filled with water), replacing plastic flooring, cleaning & seeding of plant trays, applying fertilizer and pesticides to seedlings as needed, maintaining proper greenhouse environmental conditions to include monitoring of house temps and PH levels to promote plant growth. Workers may ride mechanical transplanters and/or walk behind transplanters to reset missing plants or assist in any other activity needed in the planting process. Pump and flood rows with water, move irrigation along with building dikes in fields with manual shovel work, all as needed. Workers will remove tops and suckers by hand taking care not to break the mother plant and leaving the proper number of leaves for maturation as instructed by supervisor. Tobacco plant may be 6-7 feet in height. Tobacco rows may be as long 3600 feet. During cultivation of crop, workers will be required to clean and weed crop by hand, with hoe, and/or walk behind mechanical equip ensuring that plants are left clear of any obstruction created by the cultivation process and keep the equipment operator informed of potential problems. Once plants reach maturity, the entire plant is cut at ground level using a handheld burley knife, an instrument 14 inches long with a knife blade. Place 3 nail into each individual stalk to allow for hanging in the barn. Place on trailer, transport to barn, then manually hang stalks onto barn wires approx 5-16 ft from the ground. It may be necessary to curtain wrap outside of the barn. Once properly cured, the stalks are taken down out of the barn and taken to stripping location where the leaves are manually removed from stalk with grading taking place concurrently. Loose leaves are then packed in 1 lb bundles tied with string, then place in 600 lb barrels to cure. Rotate the barrels to reverse stack order as needed. Load/unload trucks and deliver to market as required. Workers are required to work in fields when tobacco leaves are wet with dew or rain. Workers will work and perform repetitive tasks on their feet in bent and stooped positions for long periods of time. M-F, some Sat/Sun, OT varies. Help repair and maintain barn, bldgs, ditches, equip, farm, fences, field, irrigation, levees, properties, roads, and shop. Workers should not have any allergies to noxious plants or approved insect control sprays. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray and related chemicals and pesticides, etc. may affect workers ability to perform the job. Workers must be able to lift & carry up to 75lbs consistently throughout the day. Workers must be in good physical condition with the ability to stand for long periods of time, with considerable kneeling & stooping required. Workers must not be claustrophobic or have a fear of heights due to the nature of the work. Employees may be compensated above the stated hourly wage, this decision to pay above the prevailing hourly wage will be made by the employer, basing this decision on factors that include the individual recipient's performance and work history. Employer may require post hire, random, upon suspicion or post-accident drug testing, all at no cost to employee. Testing positive or failure to comply may result in immediate termination from employment. Job involves stooping, lifting, and working outside in inclement weather. Must have 3 mo exp in similar position. Working hours may be adjusted as needed (example: 6am-noon; 4-6pm).
