Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
130
Job Duties:
This order covers hand harvesting cucumbers, hand harvesting blueberries, mechanically harvesting blueberries, hand harvesting apples, hand harvesting pears, packing cucumbers, packing blueberries, pruning apples, pruning pears, pruning blueberries, and thinning apples. Plastic maintenance/repair and removal. Workers are designated seasonal employees. Cucumber Harvesting / Plastic Maintenance/Removal: Move along row, stoop, and bend over to pick all cucumbers in the size range specified by the supervisor, being careful not to damage or puncture plastic. Discard all jumbo/oversized cucumbers as specified by the supervisor in the row middle and place desirable cucumbers in a bucket. Workers will carry full buckets weighing approximately fifty (50) lbs. to nearby trailer for dumping. When the containers on the trailer are full the trailer is driven to the unloading area specified for that field. The workers will be given a voucher for the filled container or containers. Workers must be careful to avoid damaging vines, blooms, and small cucumbers. Workers must pick all cucumbers of marketable size and larger as specified by the supervisor. It is extremely important that the workers do not remove the undersized cucumbers. Workers will be required to stay on the assigned row. Workers must take care at all times not to bruise scrape or drop any cucumbers. Cucumber Packing: • Grading: Working carefully to remove debris and cucumbers that do not meet quality specifications as defined by grading supervisor as cucumbers move across grading conveyors. Workers will select severely misshapen, broken, yellow, disease or oversized cucumbers and remove from the packing line. Misshapen cucumbers are removed and placed on a separate conveyor to be placed in boxes and palletized separately. Cucumbers must be handled carefully to avoid bruises or cuts. • Fillers: Workers grade cucumbers and fill appropriate containers by attending their station on the packing line. Workers will be required to select severely misshapen, broken, yellow, diseased, or oversized cucumbers that were missed in the preliminary grading and remove from the packing line. This requires attention to quality and to count each cucumber being placed into packaging as specified by management. This also requires the lifting and staking of approximately 24 lbs. to 52 lbs. repeatedly. • Box Folding: Workers fold cardboard and plastic boxes for finished product packaging. Must be able to stack and move boxes to where they are needed as directed by management. • Stackers: Workers lift/carry empty pallets weighing approximately 35 lbs. and position near conveyor discharge. Workers pick up filled boxes weighing between 24 lbs. to 52 lbs., depending upon grade, from conveyor and stack carefully by prescribed pattern and height onto pallets. May also be responsible for tagging pallets as directed by management. Support jobs include bin and pallet repair and cleanup. • Sanitation: Workers are responsible for picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors and other farm and packing facility sanitation duties. The management will provide specific instructions and close supervision. Packing facility sanitation may require power washing, sanitizing, sweeping, and wiping of surfaces and the ability to move heavy equipment by hand to facilitate adequate cleaning and sanitizing. Work will be closely monitored and reviewed for quality and thoroughness of sanitation.
