Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:

Job Duties:
Job requires the application, handling, and management of manure as part of the farm's nutrient management program, as well as equipment operation tasks including snow removal during winter months. Employees are responsible for applying manure to agricultural fields at specified rates to ensure proper fertilization while minimizing environmental impact. This includes handling pen pack manure using loaders and chain floor spreaders, and inspecting each load to ensure safety and compliance prior to transport and application. Employees will also manage and oversee the manure stockpile, ensuring proper storage and monitoring for potential runoff or contamination risks. Accurate load sheets must be completed for every load to support record keeping and traceability requirements. The role requires preparing, maintaining, cleaning, servicing, and operating all equipment used for manure handling and application. Routine inspections and preventative maintenance of machinery are expected to ensure operational readiness and safety. Basic troubleshooting and mechanical repair assistance may be required to keep equipment functioning properly. The position is also responsible for the efficient and safe operation of grinding equipment used in processing forage materials such as hay, cornstalks, and other feed components. Primary operational duties include loading materials into the grinder's tub using a grapple loader, excavator, or skid steer. The operator manages the grinding process through a central control console or remote control by adjusting the tub's rotation speed to regulate material flow into the hammermill, monitoring engine load to avoid overload, and selecting appropriate screen sizes to achieve the required particle size. Vigilant monitoring of machine performance is essential, requiring the operator to listen for changes in engine noise and observe material consistency to detect and address potential issues. The operator is also responsible for inspecting incoming materials for foreign objects, such as rocks or metal, that could damage the hammermill. In cases where feed is being prepared, the operator may blend various forage types to produce a balanced feed ration. In addition to operational responsibilities, the position performs daily maintenance of the tub grinder to ensure the longevity and reliability of the machine. This includes conducting pre- and post-operation inspections to identify leaks, loose bolts, and worn components. Routine lubrication of moving parts is required, with some components needing multiple applications per day to prevent wear. The operator also inspects and replaces high-wear parts such as hammers and screens as needed. General cleaning duties involve the removal of packed debris and old material, particularly prior to storage, to mitigate the risk of fire and corrosion. During the winter months or in periods of snow accumulation, the position includes snow removal responsibilities. This involves operating snow removal equipment to clear snow from feedlots, driveways, access roads, and equipment paths. Sand or salt may be applied to maintain safe walking and driving conditions around livestock areas and work zones. Timely snow removal is essential to prevent disruption in daily operations, particularly feeding and equipment access.
