Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays):
First-line supervision and coordination of agricultural workers. Under the direction of farm management, assign tasks and monitor crop production operations. Train workers in techniques such as planting, cultivating, or harvesting and in use of safety measures. Train workers in safe equipment operation. Take directions from managers on work schedules, production requirements, and conditions of equipment and supplies. Maintain details of personnel actions. Operate employer's electronic time keeping system. First-line supervisors do not have direct hiring or firing authority.
Workers may perform a variety of the following job duties:
• Record information about crops, such as pesticide use, yields, or costs.
• Participate in the inspection, grading, sorting, storage, and post-harvest treatment of crops.
• Harvest plants, and transplant or pot and label them.
• General farm maintenance of vehicles, implements, and equipment.
• Set up and operate irrigation equipment.
• Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress.
• Identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers.
• Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops.
• Load agricultural products into trucks, and drive trucks to market or storage facilities.
• Clean work areas, and maintain grounds and landscaping.
• Sell and deliver plants and flowers to customers.
• Regulate greenhouse conditions, and indoor and outdoor irrigation systems.
• Feel plants' leaves and note their coloring to detect the presence of insects or disease.
• Provide information and advice to the public regarding the selection, purchase, and care of products.
• Maintain and repair irrigation and climate control systems.
• Dig, cut, and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees, and shrubs.
• Record information about plants and plant growth.
• Maintain inventory, ordering materials as required.
• Dig, rake, and screen soil, filling cold frames and hot beds in preparation for planting.
• Inspect plants and bud ties to assess quality.
• Move containerized shrubs, plants, and trees, using wheelbarrows or tractors.
• Tie and bunch flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees, wrap their roots, and pack them into boxes to fill orders.
• Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials to condition soil, using wheelbarrows or carts and shovels.
• Repair farm buildings, fences, and other structures.
• General repairs and maintenance of farm structures, including aluminum frames, replaces and repairs plastic, coverings, digging structures and miscellaneous nursery maintenance.
• Plant, spray, weed, fertilize, water, and prune plants, shrubs, and trees, using gardening tools.
Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Workers will be exposed to wet and cold weather working in fields. Workers will be required to work in rain or snow not severe enough to stop work activities. Temperatures may range from 20 to 100 F. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations.
Employer requires all newly-hired employees to take and pass an employer-paid drug test before starting work. Drug test not required for prospective applicants prior to hiring decision. All testing is conducted uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended and accepted by the new hire. Workers testing positive will be immediately terminated and paid for all hours worked between the first date of employment and the date of termination, if any.
