Job Duties:
Crops/Commodities: Fruit orchard work: Peaches, nectarines, blueberries, produce, flowers Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays): Plant, cultivate and hand-harvest berries, flowers and tree fruit. Prune, trim, and maintain crops . Spread and remove ground covers. Place and monitor bug traps and report problematic insect populations to supervisor(s). Trellis berry canes and fruit trees. Monitor growth for tipping/pruning. Pick/harvest berries, flowers and fruit according to quality standards. Load/transport harvested berries. Decide when fruit is ready to harvest/ When first pick will be. Walk rows/aisles in orchard, carry ladder to/from field/wagon. Remove fruit from tree and place into basket. Must take care to avoid breaking limbs, knocking off fruit, damaging tree, or slipping/falling, or spilling fruit. Move full baskets to wagon/truck located in orchard. Bruised or damaged fruit must be identified during quality control checks and separated/graded in field or packing shed. Supervisors may issue written disciplinary notice to workers with a significant number of culls, bruised or damaged fruit. Repeated failure to follow quality control instructions may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. May perform miscellaneous grove clean-up duties when harvest work not available (or when workers placed on light duty after injury). Clean-up activities include sprouting, pruning, debris removal, weeding or vine removal, irrigation maintenance or repair, or other related tasks. Spot and/or strip pick fruit based on seasonal need. Gently twist or pick fruit/ berries off of tree/ bush with thumb and palm of hand to avoid stem pulls, punctures, bruising, or other damage. Separate seconds. Fill baskets/ fruit buckets and place fruit on wagon or transport vehicle. Must be able to identify and abide by color/size/quality requirements. Must be able to differentiate between colors, level of ripeness and fruit varieties accurately. Must accurately identify and separate misshapen, damaged or otherwise unmarketable fruit. Hand prune based on fruit variety. Use manual, electric and mechanized pruning tools and equipment. Identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches rubbing against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood, and shoots-suckers. Annual crop replacement. Should a crop die or in the event of a significant crop loss, workers will help plant, maintain and harvest a replacement crop. Mow, cut, and weed fields. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Bending, stooping and kneeling required. Use tools including but not limited to hoes, shovels, shears, clippers, loppers, weed whackers, and chainsaws. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Assist with farm building/field maintenance and repairs. Maintain/repair fences. Install/maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Move and install irrigation pipes and equipment. Dig and maintain ditches. Workers injured on the job and unable to perform the full range of duties may be offered light duty, if available. Light duty tasks may vary depending on availability of task, nature of worker's injury, and instructions from worker's physician. Light duty tasks may include blight checking, fruit checking/quality control, light picking/pruning, sorting, or tree counting. Mix and apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other crop protectants at the correct times, rates and locations in accordance with the label for that individual chemical. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant related treatments at the correct times and rates depending on plant type, growth, climate and crop conditions. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job.
