- Job Duties:
- Crops/Commodities: Peppers, cucumbers, squash, beans, eggplant, and cabbage. Plant, cultivate, harvest, grade and pack peppers, cucumbers, squash, beans, eggplant, and cabbage by hand and machine. Use hand tools such as shovels, shears, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks and knives. Duties include counting and checking, planting, transplanting, weeding, staking and stringing crops; laying and taking up plastic. Prepare fields for planting. Manually harvest produce onto conveyor system that is pulled by a tractor. Walk behind conveyor system in field and repeatedly stoop to pick up pepper, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, and cabbage and place on conveyor belt. As conveyor system moves through the field, workers must make sure all products of correct size and maturity on assigned row(s) are picked. Make boxes. Clean, grade, pack, field pack, load and unload harvested products, or place into bins for shipment by size, weight, color or condition. Cucumbers, peppers, and beans are transported to the packinghouse for washing, grading, sizing and waxing on mechanical line. Workers will sort, grade, size and fill boxes on the cucumber, pepper, and bean line while standing for prolonged periods of time. On specialty orders, peppers may be brought from the field in RPC containers to the pepper line at the packinghouse and repacked into display boxes and/or picked and packed in the field. Complete field cleanup activities after harvest. Direct and monitor the work of casual and seasonal help during work such as planting and harvesting. Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress. Workers with licenses may drive multi-purpose vehicles including buses to haul crops, supplies, tools, or farm workers on and off the farm. Workers are responsible for farm, field and shed sanitation including picking up trash, cleaning packing line, cleaning bathrooms, and sweeping floors. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Work is very fast paced during busy season. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. The employer will offer the job to any able, qualified, and available US worker that meets the Skill Level 1 threshold. As such, the minimum rate paid to workers hired under this job order will be the Skill Level 1 wages. The employer will also offer the job to workers, including returning H2A workers, that possess beyond the Skill Level 1 requirements. Some of these workers may have many months of experience, and the employer reserves the right to pay those workers at rates above the minimum required. The employer reserves the right to adjust worker pay throughout the season with progression in skill, training, capacity, etc. (i.e., move worker pay from Skill 1 to a higher rate of pay), and/or based on piece rates of crop handled.
