Shipyard Job Duties:
1. Vessel Cleaning:
Employees will wash down oyster vessels using high-pressure water hoses to remove mud, debris, and biofouling organisms such as barnacles.
Cleaning may also include scrubbing vessel surfaces (interior and exterior) using hard-bristle brushes and biodegradable marine soap.
Tools and equipment used: high-pressure water hoses, buckets, marine cleaning agents, scrub brushes, and hand-held squeegees.
2. Grinding and Surface Preparation:
Employees will grind rust or chipped paint areas on the metal hull or rails of oyster boats in preparation for repainting.
This involves the use of hand-held electric angle grinders and wire brushes to remove corrosion and smooth surfaces.
Safety equipment such as gloves, safety goggles, and dust masks will be provided.
3. Painting:
Once grinding is completed, employees will paint exposed metal or wooden boat parts with marine-grade primer and protective coating.
Paint will be applied using hand brushes and rollers (not spray guns), ensuring coverage of all weather-exposed areas.
Tools and equipment used: marine-grade paint, brushes, rollers, paint trays, and protective gloves/masks.
4. Maintenance, Repair, and Handyman Activities:
Boat Maintenance and Repairs:
Replace worn ropes, patch small holes in deck or hull, grease winches and hinges, change filters or fluids in small auxiliary boat engines (if needed), and secure loose fittings.
Tools used: adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, grease guns, hand saws, and marine sealant.
Dock Repairs:
Replace or repair broken dock planks or cleats, hammer nails or drive screws into dock boards, and re-secure tie-down posts as needed.
Tools used: claw hammers, cordless drills, saws, wood screws, nails, pry bars, and levels.
Shipyard Facility Tasks:
Perform general upkeep of walkways, tool sheds, and boat slips, including disposing of waste, organizing gear, and securing equipment.
May also assist in loading/unloading materials needed for boat maintenance.

Attach apparatus devices to cable, boom & hoist. Load/unload equipment & supplies. Attach nets & lines, haul in, sort, clean catch, culling oysters, transplant oysters, store, and unload oysters. Wash deck, equipment, cooler and cabin. Sort, clean and return undesirables and illegal oysters to bay. Place PVC pipe and/or oyster markers in private oyster leases. Transplant oysters, shells and rocks. Workers will also throw rocks into the waters within the leases. Secure and remove vessels docking lines to and from dock and other vessels. Shipyard work includes cleaning the vessel, grind, paint, lubricate, adjust and make minor repairs to engine and equipment. Perform maintenance, repair work and handyman activities on the oyster boats, docks and shipyards. Perform any combination of the following duties aboard the fishing vessel: stand lookout, steering & engine room watches. Load/unload oyster sacks from the vessel to the dock cooler and/or freight trucks. The oyster deckhand must comply with all U.S. Coast Guard safety procedures and all Texas Parks and Wildlife laws.
