Job Duties:
Perform any combination of the following tasks to attend milking sheep during the milking season: assist in the shearing of sheep by herding sheep into corrals and herding them through the shearing process; attend to pregnant ewes and their young during the birthing season; identify ewes that are preparing to give birth; monitor for birthing problems and take correct actions when problems are identified; keep records of the ear tag numbers of each ewe and her lambs; keep records of lamb ear tag numbers by sex; care for young offspring by drying them off, mixing and feeding supplemental milk, treating umbilical cords, vaccinating, splinting, and cleaning feeding equipment and the lamb barn; closely inspect and monitor udders daily and move ewes to the milking rotation when needed; herd ewes to and from the parlor and assist with the milking process twice daily; clean and sanitize udders the milking parlor, milking equipment and tools, milk handling equipment, exterior entrance and exit areas twice daily; sort sheep according to size, vigor and sex; assist with hoof trimming to reduce the occurrence of discomfort and disease; inspect and clean sheep waterers daily; inspect hay feed bunks and fork hay daily, and empty and clean bunks as necessary; report to employer dehydration & other indicators of deterioration in livestocks body condition/behavioral changes indicating malnutrition or disease; feed and water sheep or ensure adequate provision of both; move sheep to appropriate pens and through the milking parlor; administer medication to sheep as needed; brand, tag, clip or otherwise mark sheep for identification purposes; dock lambs; assist with sorting of cull sheep; prepare and feed hay and supplemental rations to sheep; clean, build, maintain and/or repair fences, handling facilities and livestock equipment to ensure the safety and health of sheep and employees; clean sheep pens. Perform any combination of the following tasks required to operate equipment related to the care and production of milking sheep: operate and tend equipment such as pickups, 4-wheelers, tractors, tub grinders and skid steers; trailers (livestock, utility and flatbed; high pressure washers/sprayers; wet/dry shop vacs; feed mixers; augers; floor cleaners; chemical mixers/sprayers; power and cordless drills and attachments; vacuum milking system, meters, claws, and related equipment; bulk tank, pumps, and piping; adjust repair and service farm, sheep and milking machinery, equipment and tools and notify employer of malfunctions; observe and listen to machinery operation to detect equipment malfunctions; operate and tend all milking and milk handling equipment in a manner that adheres to employers operating, cleaning and sanitation protocols. May assist with the operation and maintenance of hot water heaters and HVAC systems as well as laboratory equipment. May operate paint sprayers, hand painting tools, grass watering systems, lawn mowers and weed trimmers and sprayers. These duties will be directly related to the required cleaning and sanitation of the milking parlor, sheep handling facility and farm premises.

Successful applicants will be required to handle sheep using low stress handling methods, meet personal hygiene requirements, wear parlor uniforms, and comply with employers maintenance, operating, cleaning and sanitation protocols. The quality of the final product for this premium cheese production operation is determined by the handling of the sheep, the cleaning and sanitation of udders, and the maintenance, operation, cleaning, and sanitation of the premises, parlor, equipment, tools, and supplies. Therefore, the employer is strict on these requirements. Employees are expected to operate machinery and equipment in a safe and responsible manner, and further, will be expected to maintain equipment and machinery to a standard established by the employer.
