- Job Duties:
- All job duties are closely and directly related to the production of horses and cattle. The larger percentage of the work activities will be related to general care of horses.
Perform any combination of the following tasks required for the care of brood mares, assistance with foaling and the care of foals. Tasks include but are not limited to the following: Identify and catch horses in stalls and fields, affix halters and lead ropes, lead into barn and tie securely and
turn back out. Competence in basic grooming practices including bathing, brushing, hoof care cleaning. Clean stalls by removing soiled bedding and manure, replace with fresh bedding. Strip stalls and disinfect floors, walls and surrounding areas for broodmares. Sweep barn aisles, stall
areas, ceilings to remove dirt, hay, cobwebs and other debris. Maintain/clean and fill water troughs and buckets. Handle basic feeding activities including apportioning grain, hay and feed supplements according to instruction. Help maintain equipment, assist with mowing and weeding,
work in fields, clean around barns. Observe and identify sick or injured animals. Assist farrier in trimming feet and shoeing horses. Hold horses for farriers and veterinarians and administer routine intra-muscular injections, assist veterinarians with treatment of sick/injured horses and
pregnancy checks of mares; administer first aid and medications to sick/injured horses; take temperatures of horses; wrap legs of injured horses or for transportation of horses; administer de-worming and vaccination schedule for yearlings, pre/post-natal mares and for foals. Assist in
breeding and foaling of mares. Assist with post-pregnancy treatment of mares and neonatal care of foals. Work with foals/yearlings, including brushing, leading, picking up feet, petting and touching foals to acclimate them to humans; change foals halters. Assist in handling young horses
in preparation for shipment.
Perform any combination of the following tasks attending to livestock: feed and water livestock or ensure adequate provision of both; assist animals with birthing and health of offspring; examine animals to detect diseases and injuries; guard animals from predatory animals and from
eating poisonous and/or noxious plants; assist with the vaccination of livestock by herding into corrals and/or stalls or manually restraining animals; apply medications to cuts and bruises; spray livestock with insecticide; assist with castration of livestock; clip identifying notches on or
brand animals; assist with irrigating forage for livestock, apply weed control on grazing areas (including noxious, invasive and poisonous plant species); build and/or repair fence and livestock facilities to contain or protect livestock; clean and disinfect livestock corrals, pens and
handling facilities; lift and stack bales of hay and sacks of grain and mineral onto a feed truck or wagon; assist in the maintenance of tools, machinery, equipment and livestock handling facilities necessary to livestock production.
The expected work schedule is eight hours per day Monday thru Friday, Saturday or Sunday and may be required in a split shift due to the nature of job duties. Actual hours may vary due to weather, time of year and the requirements of horse and cattle production. Work may be
offered more than the specified hours per day, but only required to work the hours specified. Work may be offered 7 days a week but only required 6 days a week. Work may be requested.
