Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
50
Job Duties:
Heavy labor of harvesting citrus, peaches, and dates as per color and size requirements. Climbing regular and 3-point ladder as needed to pick fruit. Employee will be using proper shears for picking citrus. Cutting, not pulling, the fruit with hand shear; Putting fruit into bag sack, which is carried on the front of the body, with straps around the shoulder and back for support. Sack full of fruit can weigh up to 50 lbs. Sack is then emptied into bin in a manner instructed by supervisor. This is repeated until bin is full. Employee will need to walk around the tree, under the tree, and inside the tree and from a ladder to pick the appropriate fruit. Employees will be wearing safety protection, hard hats, gloves, protective sleeves, knee pads, and eye protection. Employees will be doing irrigation, pruning, shoveling, and weeding citrus, date and peach trees, using both hands pruning shears, pruning loppers and long handled hoes. Employees will be expected to follow the direction and techniques specific to various trees from the supervisor. Employees will be planting citrus. Start times vary depending on the weather (fog or heavy dew). Fruit cannot be picked until it is dry on the outside of the fruit. Employees will be removing weeds around various trees using a long-handled hoe. Peaches: Peaches are harvested based upon fruit timing. The fresh table peaches will be harvested by hand by snapping off the fresh table peach and set into the field box in two layers. Fresh table peaches must be harvested when fruit has a red blush, slight softness and is desired to be size 44 to 60. Sizes are determined by the final packaging flats. Plastic trays/cups will be provided to harvesters to help determine size. Harvesters will also be provided with tripod 12-foot ladders. They will need to snap the peaches off and set gently into the field box in two layers of fruit. There are handles that snap onto the top and snap off field boxes so they can be moved and stacked. Those field boxes are then loaded onto a flatbed UTV to transport them outside of the block and stacked onto a pallet to be loaded onto a truck and sent to the packing facility. Ring Picking: Ring picking involved using a determined fruit size that is correlated to a supplied fruit ring. The top smaller circle is for ones finger or thumb to hold while using to slip the larger diameter circle of the fruit ring over the fruit to determine if it is correct to pick or leave on the tree. The larger diameter circle is the ring that supplied to the harvester to use to determine if a fruit is pickable. A fruit is able to be picked if it does not slide through the circle. If the fruit slides through the diameter of the fruit ring then it is too small and is to not be harvested. The fruit ring is to be slid from the bottom of the fruit to the center of the fruit to determine the width/diameter of the fruit. With the stem end of the fruit (where it is attached to the branch) considered to be the top of the fruit. The picking ring numbers that may be used to determine a ring pick based on market demand and sales. Strip Picking: Strip picking is when a harvester goes to pick all of the marketable fruit on the tree being harvested. There is no size determination to be made by the harvester. The only condition is that the harvester must remove all marketable fruit off of the tree. No matter the size of the fruit. This will allow the harvester to move faster through ones harvest and carry one less item during harvest (no ring to carry). All picking that is to be done still requires the use of clipper to clip the stem of the fruit from the branch that the fruit is attached to prolong life of the fruit and prevent stem/top damage to the fruit. Marketable fruit is determined by the fruit condition or demands of the packer/shipper. See Addendum C.
