Fruit Tree Planting: Trees will be unbundled and handled with care as not to break and damage young trees. Trees are planted mechanically with a planter and by hand. Worker will ride the machine and place trees in the holes/trench as the machine moves along the row. Tree graft union height will be adjusted by pulling the tree until at a specific height as instructed by supervisor. Worker will straighten tree and compact soil around tree. Worker will be required to unload boxes of trees to be planted. Some workers will walk behind planter to ensure proper planting. Worker will also assist in replacing dead trees in established orchards. Worker will use shovel to manually remove dead tree and replace with new tree.
Fruit Tree Transplanting: Worker will dig up tree and transplant to new location then follow steps described for planting tree.
Trellis system construction/install: Placement of anchor post, end angle post and inline post, with, but not limited to the following equipment: motorized platform, pneumatic post driver. Tools will be used such as drill, shovel and posthole digger. Posts may need to be re-aligned after placement with shovel, posthole digger, and level. Post will be drilled to install wire. Tree support will then be installed. This may be performed by motorized platform or up to an 8 ladder. Anchor posts are heavy and require help of two people to install properly. Worker will work with another worker to lift posts up to 120lbs.
Attaching, tying & spreading trees: Worker will attach, train and position trees to trellis system. This will include clipping, tying or spreading limbs and shoots to wire from ground or from up to 8 ladder or from motorized platform.
Orchard/Trellis removal: Worker will remove wire, tree support, posts, and anchors. Equipment used for this task may include hatchet, pry bar or shovel.
Thinning: Thinning is a manual process used to control the size and quality of grown fruit. Worker must possess ability to pick up and handle 8-foot orchard ladder weighing 40 pounds. Worker removes smallest fruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruit from within fruit cluster. Worker identifies and removes misshapen, damaged and/or other not quality fruit as directed by Employer.
Pruning: Pruning numerous varieties of fruit trees according to Employer's procedures based on difference in treatment of different varieties. Worker performs pruning on trees for long periods of time using variety of pruning equipment including hand shears, hand loppers, hand saws, and 6-10-foot ladders. Pruning and thinning may be done from ground or up to 8 feet ladder or from motorized platform. Worker may be required to selectively prune only certain size and color trees as instructed by Employer.
Worker must possess or acquire pruning skills in order to identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers with hand pruning saws and clippers, mechanized equipment in pruning activities. Worker will remove pruned branches from the trees. Workers will pull branches into drive row for removal or chopping as instructed by employer.
General Orchard Maintenance: Worker will help perform tasks associated with general orchard maintenance including but not limited to: picking up rocks and roots, picking up garbage around orchard, removing old string and wire from trellis and orchard blocks, removing exposed tree stumps from tilled ground, repair and spreading of composted material.
