This job requires a minimum of one month of verifiable prior experience working in a cotton gin. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. Safe operation of all equipment will be reviewed with workers at the time they are hired before starting work. Equipment must be operated in such a manner as to protect the operator, other workers, products and equipment. During the ginning of the cotton, workers may be required to operate various pieces of equipment, including, but not limited to, a bail hoister, skid steer, forklift and cotton module feeder. Failure to observe safe operating rules and employers directions may result in termination with or without prior notice depending on severity of infraction.
Cotton Bailing Press: Workers will load cotton modules, bring them to the feeder, feed wires on press, untarp modules, move bales from press to bale slab. Workers working in teams of 4-5 will tie, tag and bag bales of cotton as they come out of the press. Workers will attach ties to the bales while they are still in the press to secure cotton. Workers must take care that the straps are attached correctly and securely so as not to cause injury to the workers and equipment. Workers will remove a sample of the cotton from each bail per supervisors instructions. Workers will bag the bales of cotton and pace a tag on the bag. Workers will load the bales on the bail hoister. Workers will load the bales into vehicles for transport.
Mote Press: Workers will tie, tag and bag bales of mote as they come out of the press. Workers will attach ties to the bales while they are still in the press to secure cotton. Workers must take care that the straps are attached correctly and securely so as not to cause injury. Workers will bag the bales of mote and place a tag on the bag. Workers will load the bales on the baleshoister. Workers will load the bales into vehicles for transport.
General Duties: Workers may be required to assist the gin operator with various duties such as assisting or making repairs to the equipment, clearing blockages, cleaning lint filters, refilling supplies, sweeping floors, removing trash buildup, picking up cotton on yard.
Shed Sanitation: All workers will be responsible for picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors and other farm and shed sanitation duties.
Workers must possess requisite physical strength and endurance in order to repeat the ginning process throughout the workday, working quickly and skillfully to perform activities for which they were hired. Must be able to lift/carry 75 lbs.
Work is to be done for long periods of time. Workers should be able to work on their feet for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Workers will perform the majority of tasks standing in the upright position. Some tasks require workers to perform activities on their feet in stooped or crouched positions for long periods of time. Temperatures may range from 35 to 100+ degrees F. Workers may be required to work in high humidity. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. Saturday work required. Employer-paid post-hire drug testing is required upon reasonable suspicion of use and after a worker has an accident at work.
The employer has a strict prohibition on tobacco usage. No smoking or tobacco use of any kind will be permitted in the fields, in the gin, in the worker housing, in company vehicles, or anywhere on company premises. Employer reserves the right to discharge any employee found smoking or in possession of smoking materials including cigarettes, cigars, snuff, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco or smoking paraphernalia.
