Job Duties:
The nursery work position includes duties associated with the pruning, planting, harvesting, spraying and packing of nursery stock. This work can require standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds for long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. Workers in winter months will be required to cover and uncover beds with frost protection cloth when temperatures reach freezing temps or below or when there is a chance for frost as this will cause damage to crops and delay finish ready weeks. It also includes making important decisions based on size, coloring, and ripeness according to prescribed standards. This work requires adherence to important safety and quality standard operating procedures and the ability to work quickly and consistently alongside fellow workers with a positive, professional, team-based attitude and a consideration for the safety and health of fellow workers and of the consumers who will purchase nursery stock, harvested, packed, and shipped from the farm. Workers will maintain potted perennial plants which include potting, setting down in field, pruning, weeding, spacing and on occasion moving to another bed location. As well as covering and uncovering in winter due to frost/freeze temperatures. Workers will be provided with tractors, tracking wagons, containers to place weeds and debris from prunes. Once crops reach shipping spec, workers will clean and tray product from an indicated bed on their pulling ticket and place onto the tracking wagons so that they can be transported to the shipping doc via tractor. Workers will receive pruning shears to prune crops as instructed by their supervisor as each crop requires a different type of cut depending on the variety and finish week timeline. Trimmings from prunes will be placed in proper receptacle where it can be discarded away from the work area. Workers will also be required to weed plants as instructed by supervisor. Weeding is done by pulling out weeds that don't pertain to the container that the crop is growing in therefore it needs to be removed and placed in the proper receptacle that the worker is provided so that it can also be discarded. Workers will be required to grade, clean, tray product to the spec that their supervisor instructs them on. Workers will then carry trays and load them onto tracking wagons provided so that they may be transported to the shipping dock. Once on the shipping dock , they are offloaded according to the pulling/loading ticket. Workers will set on conveyer on shipping dock and product is tagged and upc'd according to the customers' requirements then product displace onto rolling racks. Once the load is complete, racks will be taken out of the cubing line and set in correct bay on dock. Then workers will load racks on to the proper truck so that it can be shipped to its destination. Workers will be required to maintain and keep and clean work area at all times. Trash and debris must be placed in proper receptacles provided by the company. Workers will be at times required to operate a tractor to transport product. They will be instructed on how to use equipment properly for their and other workers safety. A few select workers will have to transport other workers via Vans provided by the company to and from work to their housing units.
