Job Duties:
Crops/Commodities: Vegetables, perennials, annuals, ornamental shrubs, deciduous trees and/or evergreens. This job requires a minimum of three months of verifiable prior experience working in diverse production of vegetables, perennials, annuals, ornamental shrubs, deciduous trees and/or evergreens handling both manual and machine tasks associated with farming activities, including the operation of 50+ HP farming equipment. Applicants must be able to furnish verifiable job reference(s) or comparable third party documentation from recent employer(s) establishing acceptable prior experience. Plants, cultivates and harvests vegetables, containerized perennials and annuals, ornamental shrubs, deciduous trees and evergreens. Collects, plants and maintains plant cuttings and related duties. Applies organic fertilizer or appropriate organic biologicals to destroy undesirable plant growth and pests, using spray applicator. Prunes, top tapes, transplants, spaces, stakes, irrigates and culls plants to ensure development of marketable products. Harvests, packs, labels, loads and stores vegetables, perennials and annuals using techniques appropriate for individual variety. Unloads liners and supplies. Uncovers and/or recovers poly-covered winter storage houses and pulls lath strips to prepare storage houses for new poly covers. Installs and removes poly blankets used for winter protection. May harvest and prepare scions for budding or grafting; may bud or graft and wrap newly budded or grafted stock. Workers must possess the ability to recognize species and varieties of vegetables, containerized perennials and annuals, the ability to read and understand signs and labels and to understand written and oral work orders. Workers will work on their feet in bent, stooped and crouched positions for long periods of time. Employees must be able to frequently lift and carry plant material or equipment ranging in weight from 75 to 100 pounds. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, etc. may affect workers’ ability to perform the job. Workers are exposed to wet weather early in the morning through the heat of the day. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop operations. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. Daily individual work assignments, crew assignments and location of work will be made by and at the sole discretion of the farm manager and/or farm supervisor as the needs of the farming operation dictate. Workers must perform the assigned work and may not switch work assignments without the specific authorization of a company supervisor. Workers may be assigned to a variety of tasks in any given day and/or to different tasks on different days. Workers will be expected to perform any and all of the listed tasks assigned to the worker in a workmanlike and efficient manner. Employer assures that workers will be provided transportation from living quarters to work site every day (for workers who must be provided housing under the applicable regulations.) While the employer does not require prospective applicants to take and pass a drug/alcohol test prior to a hiring decision, the employer has a no-exceptions drug policy requiring newly-hired employees to take and pass an employer-paid drug/alcohol test. Every new hire must undergo testing before starting work with the company. All testing is conducted uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended to and accepted by the new hire. The employer will also test upon reasonable suspicion of use, after a worker has an accident at work and after return to duty from assessment or treatment. If an employee tests positive, he/she is immediately terminated and paid for all hours worked between the first date of employment and the date of termination, if any.
