Job Duties:
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of produce such as tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon, cantaloupe, and peppers. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm/greenhouse work/irrigation/crop production. General Farm Work/Greenhouse duties will include the following responsibilities: prepare fields, plant/spray/weed/irrigate plants/vines; sow seed and plant cuttings; recognize disease and/or nutrient/moisture requirements by plant texture/development or soil condition; observe general condition of plants/vines and apply the appropriate care; mix and/or spray chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable) to control diseases and insects; mix planting soil; thin to ensure proper load on plant/vine; identify and remove product that is misshapen, damaged or inferior; cut away excessive vine/plant growth using pruning knife and shears; train vines to trellis including clipping and tying to wire/structure; walk behind equipment to ensure plant placement; remove dead plants and replace with seeds or live plants; inspect crops for signs of disease, insect manifestations, worms and rot; sort good product from contaminated or rotting product; measure product using gages; paint/maintain/repair structures/grounds; remove undesirable and excess growth from crops, farm grounds, and greenhouses; remove debris and discarded product from fields and greenhouses; perform general cleanup of farm areas; lift items such as rolls of plastic, bundles of wire, and rolls of drip tape overhead; drive, load/unload trucks; harvest, pack, and store crop; prepare for harvesting of produce including spreading liners in bins and rolling bins into blocks by hand; prepare boxes for packing products; assemble cardboard bins and place on pallets; label/sort/prepare clamshells; pick crop from plant according to grade, color and size by grasping crop with hands and removing from plant in a motion so as not to harm adjacent plants or vines; use small knives or tools to cut crops from plants/vines; snip stems; sort produce according to grade, color and size; discard diseased/rotting/inferior product and foreign matter; carry harness, bucket or bag of up to 20 lbs. and place product into plastic lugs which hold approximately 30 pounds of produce; repeatedly catch and throw products weighing up to 30 pounds; hand product off to or receive from another worker for placement in boxes located on trailers; wipe dirt off product; wash product; place product into containers or onto conveyors exercising care to avoid plant and product damage; load containers onto trucks/wagons/conveyors; work in cold storage location to sort/clean product; prepare crops for shipment; apply stickers to product prior to packing in containers; weigh product and place into clamshells; place clamshells into boxes/containers; hand stack boxes onto pallets; load/unload/pickup/move product using forklift; clean fields after harvest; perform any other labor considered necessary for the production of produce. Drip Irrigation Duties will include the following: move and lay drip irrigation equipment in fields; maintain and repair drip irrigation; remove drip irrigation and lay flat from fields prior to harvest; flush drip irrigation lines; walk behind tractor to ensure layflat spools correctly when removing from field.
