Job Duties:
Plant, cultivate, harvest and pack fruits and vegetables by hand or machine including but not limited to: sweet corn, sweet potatoes, melons, squash, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and pumpkins. Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears and knives. Propagate, transplant, weed, prune and thin. Apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to crops. Lay and/or remove plastic. Clean plastic of debris. Remove or clean plant debris or vines from ground or trellises. Train vines or plants on strings or trellises. Install and take down hooped row cover. Bed sweet potatoes into the dirt and place plastic paper over the beds. Use shovels to shovel dirt onto the beds that are covered with plastic. Remove paper from the beds and put a remake paper over the beds. After the potato plants sprout and come through the ground, cut the plants with a butcher knife. Place the plants into plastic crates. Load crates of slips onto a flatbed trailer. Ride a transplanter to transplant plants. Manually feed the potato plants into the fingers on the transplanter that places the plant into the ground and covers the root of the plant with dirt. Walk behind the transplanter and plant slips by hand using a stick. Ride a potato digger or harvester and pick up potatoes off of a chain, sort them, and place them into boxes on the digger while harvesting. Workers must select harvestable produce based on correct size, maturity and quality. Clean, pack and load harvested products. Wash and pack potatoes into boxes for shipping. Remove completed or defective products and place them on conveyors or in specified areas such as loading docks. Seal containers using glue, string, nails and hand tools. Load materials and products into package processing equipment. Use hand tools to assemble, line, and pad cartons, crates and containers. Workers may ride on tractor, maintain trellises, repair fences and farm buildings or participate in irrigation activities. Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Package harvested crops into bins, bags, boxes, plastic containers and crates. Apply ice to select harvested crops. Workers must use care when grading and packing not to damage and bruise produce. Discard inferior or defective products and/or foreign matter and place acceptable produce into containers for further processing. Weigh products or estimate their weight, visually or by feel. Place products in containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. Load boxes onto pallets and transport vehicles. Transport produce and agricultural equipment from field to packing shed. Move, load and unload greenhouse grown plants, planting tools and materials. Drive trucks to haul products to the market. Perform quality control on inbound/outbound loads. Follow quality control standards. Operate tractors and tractor-drawn machinery (including variations such as: tracotor, plow, potato transplanter, bush hog, and skid steer) to plow, harrow, fertilize, apply chemicals, plant, cultivate, or harvest crops. Pull and/or hoe grass and weeds from the fields. Workers are also responsible for farm, field and shed sanitation duties. Set up, operate and repair irrigation systems. Use mowers and weed eaters on employer’s premises around wells, buildings, farm equipment. Work will continue during wet periods while the fields are too muddy for the harvesting with tractors. Clean and maintain containers, materials, supplies, greenhouses and work areas. Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker’s ability to perform the job. Special Requirements:
Three months of farmwork experience required. Extensive walking, standing, bending and stooping, pushing and pulling, twisting, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Perform repetitive movements. Work may be in inclement weather including extreme heat, cold and/or rain for extensive periods of time. Drug testing is conducted post hire at the employers expense and is not part of the interview process.
