Job Duties:
Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Must be able to work with minimum supervision. Clearing the ground of rocks sticks & roots by hand, hoe or pull weeds by hand. Workers will perform duties associated with strawberry field, maintenance/establishment, including but not limited to placing and picking up straw from fields, placing runners, row covers, hoeing, bloom sniping planting and set up/maintain irrigation systems, drain water from fields with hand tools and shovel when needed. May repair fences and farm buildings may also participate in irrigation activities. June 1st to late June, Strawberries- Workers will hand harvest strawberries to quality standards and according to size, color and degree of maturity. Workers should not harvest strawberries that are green or visibly rotten. Strawberries should be solid, free from dirt, soil, and sand. Workers will pick the berry from the plant keeping the cap on the berry. Picking is typically done in a kneeling position, advancing down each row. The picked strawberry will be placed in a quart box, placed on 2 8-quart flat, properly filled which is around 16 pounds. Workers will then take carrier to the packing wagon, placed on the table, in turn, picking up the next two trays to be filled and so on. Workers will move productively along assigned row from start to end, stoop and bend to harvest strawberries according to color and degree of maturity. Workers will use caution to gently pull the fruit from the stem and gently place harvested fruit into containers, caps must remain on the strawberries and no pinching. Workers must be careful all the time to prevent damaging fruit and plant. Strawberries are to be handled in a gentle manner. Late June to Mid-July- Manually weeding while walking fields by hand or using hand tools. Workers will continue with the process until other crops ripen. Mid-July to early September- Workers will be harvesting cantaloupes and watermelons by ripeness. Workers will pick and lift melons onto conveyor vehicle walking in field rows. Some workers may move melons into shipping bins. Early September to October 31- Workers will walk in the pumpkin fields, select ripe pumpkins, cut selected pumpkins, and move to rows along the driveways. When the trucks arrive, workers will lift and stack pumpkins into trucks for a safe transport. Workers will containerized shipment, count and stack pumpkins into bins. May drive workers to/from the store/fields.
