Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
57
Job Duties:
All Activities: Workers will perform described job specifications as instructed by the farm Manager or Crew Supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time and may include one or more of the following job specifications: Harvesting Watermelons Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Following the Supervisors instructions, workers will move down assigned row to turn watermelon vines from drive-rows. Instruction will be given for each task and standard of performance communicated to workers. Workers will be assigned a row or series of rows and required to select and pick produce according to criteria outlined and demonstrated by managers such as size, coloring, and ripeness. The worker will be required to use a sharp knife to cut watermelons from the vine, and then flip the watermelon over on its belly to indicate if the melons are ripe. Each worker must take care and not crack the melon by pulling the it from the vine which may result in damage to the stem end. Pitching: A pitching crew follows the cutters and pitches the watermelons from hand to hand, and then loads them in trucks in the field to be transported to a packing facility. Watermelons must be loaded on their sides to protect the thinner rind at the top and bottom from damage. Sweet Potato Harvest: Workers will walk along row that has been previously plowed. Workers will stoop, bend, and kneel to pick up sweet potatoes using hands and fingers to dig out unexposed potatoes. Sweet Potato Planting: Create raised mounds 6 to 8 inches tall and about 12 inches wide. Plan 3 feet between mounds so that there is enough space for vines to run. Plant the slips on a warm, overcast day, when the soil temperature has reached 60°F. Break off the lower leaves, leaving only the top ones. Set the slips deep enough to cover the roots and the stem up to the leaves. Sweet potatoes will form on the nodes, 12 to 18 inches apart. Water with a high-phosphorus liquid fertilizer, then water generously for 7 to 10 days to make sure that the plants root well. Quality Check: Workers may be asked to check the quality of the watermelons by moving down a row checking quality to ensure that all ripe melons have been sufficiently removed. The workers will use the following characteristics to check for ripeness: Firm symmetrical fruit with a pale or buttery yellow spot on the bottom. Heavy for its size due to the fruit’s high water content. Free from bruises, cuts, and dents; a few scratches are okay. Quality checkers will report quality issues to work supervisor for appropriate handling. Additionally, the workers may be asked to check the quality and grade sweet potatoes in the field while separating the sweet potatoes as directed into the designated bins.
