Job Duties:
Plant, cultivate, harvest, grade and pack pepper, squash, cucumber, watermelon, tomato, eggplant, beans, cantaloupe, corn, okra, peas, onions, strawberries, cabbage, greens, broccoli, sunflowers, and peanuts by hand or machine. Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. Till soil. Transplant, weed, thin, and prune crops. Set transplants or seed by hand as directed. Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Harvest produce making sure that plants are picked clean of all produce of correct size and maturity according to supervisor's instruction and place into container while keeping up with trailer that is moving through the field as the workers are picking produce. Carry harvested product to trailer and worker will scan individual identification badge in order to account for piece rate. Grade, sort, wash, select, label, pack, and/or load harvested products. Assemble cartons, crates and containers. Install or remove items required in plasticulture. Install or remove stakes, wire, strings, and netting. Assist with crop care when needed such as plow, harrow, fertilize soil, plant, spray, harvest, and lay plastic. Participate in irrigation activities. Set up and operate irrigation equipment. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Workers with licenses may drive the bus or other transportation vehicles to transport workers and may be offered additional work hours. Assist in Good Agricultural Practices policies. In addition to the general farm tasks above, workers with 12 months of experience supervising a work crew in the production of fresh produce may be assigned to supervise production by performing the following additional duties and when supervising will be paid at the rate listed for this activity: workers will directly supervise and coordinate agricultural activities of one or more crews of hand harvest agricultural workers; crew sizes may vary, ranging from approximately 20 to 55 workers; assign tasks, and work aids such as buckets and tie wires; convey safety instructions, spacing and variety requirements, size and maturity instruction; demonstrate proper planting, harvesting, and other crop specific issues to crew members; review daily work for quality; enforce work rules; Implement employer policies and procedures; review daily tally sheets, time, and attendance records of crew members; locate and correct data entry errors or report them to farmer; use employer provided electronic equipment for custom data entry; compile, sort, and verify the accuracy of data before it is entered; ensure field sanitation facilities are stocked and operable; assign work tools and supplies for employee use; direct and transport workers to appropriate worksites in employer provided vehicles; immediately report injuries, illness or job abandonment to the farmer; maintain logs of activities and completed work; document reasons for periods of little or no work during the regular work schedule; inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress; identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers; record information about crops, such as pesticide use, yields or costs; collect harvest data; notify the farmer of crop related circumstances that may result in early completion or the need for an extension of the employment period; coordinate harvest and field logistics with farmers and farm managers. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Special Requirements:
Three months verifiable experience hand harvesting a perishable crop. Work outside in extremely hot, cold and/or wet weather. Walk, bend, stoop and reach for prolonged periods of time. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be 18 or older. Employer is a drug-free workplace. Drug testing is conducted post-hire at the employer's expense and is not part of the interview process.
