Job Duties:
Crops/Commodities: apples. This job requires a minimum of 3 months of prior experience working in tree fruit orchards, preferably harvesting apples, handling primarily manual tasks associated with fruit production and harvest activities. Workers must be able to perform all duties with accuracy and efficiency. General: Workers are expected to manually plant, cultivate and harvest apples. Workers may use hand tools, including but not limited to, shovels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, knives and saws (chainsaws). May operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery and self-propelled machinery to plow, fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, prune, thin, train trees, spray and harvest crops. Use equipment, sanitizers and hand tools to sanitize bins, machinery and equipment to meet food safety regulations. May repair and maintain farm vehicles, implements, and mechanical equipment. Will clean and maintain work areas. Instructions and overall supervision and direction of workers will be provided by a company supervisor. Workers hired pursuant to this labor certification must be able to comprehend and follow instructions of a company supervisor and communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers will be expected to perform basic duties in a timely and proficient manner without close supervision. Workers must obey all safety rules and basic instructions and be able to recognize, understand and comply with safety, pesticide warning/re-entry and other essential postings. Work assignments will be made at the sole discretion of the employer conditional on unforeseen circumstances such as weather or other unscheduled/unexpected interruptions in regular work. Workers must perform the assigned work and may not perform duties not provided in this application, or work in areas not assigned without the specific authorization of the company supervisor. Workers will be expected to perform any of the listed duties as assigned by his/her supervisor. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach and lift. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Work is to be done for long periods of time. Workers will work outdoors which involves exposure to sun (heat and humidity), wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, cold, insects and other natural elements. Work required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Temperatures may range from 20 to 100 F. Workers required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. Employer-paid post-hire drug testing is required after a worker has an accident at work. Will be trained in USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification standards. Failure to abide by GAP standards will be grounds for dismissal. Workers required to follow common sanitary practices at all times, particularly when hand harvesting crops for human consumption. Workers required to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before entering fields for harvest activities. Must successfully complete and pass a pesticide training course. Thinning: Hand thin to control the size and quality of fruit. Remove fruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits. Must accurately identify and remove misshapen, damaged or otherwise unmarketable fruit.
