- Job Duties:
- Plant, cultivate, maintain, and harvest flowering trees, shrubs, and bare root tree stock. Perform manual tasks associated with the outdoor production of field grown horticultural products. Prepare fields/soil for planting. Remove cull stock, debris, tree stumps, brush, ferns, vines and other growth from planting area. Prepare trees for digging by tying or wrapping as necessary. Harvest trees and other plants with shovel or tree spade. Perform general plant maintenance. Set up, operate, repair and maintain irrigation parts and equipment. Irrigate and apply fertilizers. Apply pesticides including herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Train, stake, tie, prune, trim, shear, space, transplant, and cull trees and/or plants to ensure availability of marketable products. Shear trees with proper taper and bud cut angle for quality. Count, inventory, and grade trees. Move containerized shrubs and trees. Dig trees and shrubs and wrap with burlap or other covering around root balls and secure with twine and/or staples. Pack, label, tag, pull, sort, and store plants by variety. Tie, bunch, wrap and pack shrubs and trees to fill orders. Load and unload shrubs and trees on and off trucks for delivery and installation and at unanticipated customer sites in areas surrounding the company tree farm. Clean/maintain equipment and work area. Dig and maintain ditches. Haul, spread and apply fertilizers, pesticides, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate, and crop conditions. Haul and apply water to trees and shrubs in containers. Fertilizers, pesticides, and water that must be hauled and applied to tree stock weighs up to 100 pounds. Mow, cut, and weed fields. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and post season cleanup activities. Load/unload product, materials, and supplies. Move products to designated areas as instructed by supervisor. Perform winterization activities. Operate tractors, equipment, various implements, and nursery vehicles including, but not limited to skid steer, bush hog, UTV, sprayer, hog ring air gun, tree spade, trencher, auger, hedge trimmer, weed eater and chain saw. Assist with farm building/field maintenance and repairs. Build/repair fences and construct trellises. Workers with a valid driver's licenses may transport workers and may be offered additional hours. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. Employer reserves the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able but is unwilling to perform the work necessary for the employer to grow a premium quality product, or for any other lawful reason.
Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time.
TERMINATION. All workers will be subject to a 2 day introductory period, during which the employer will evaluate workers' performance of required tasks. Employer reserves the right to terminate a worker at the conclusion of the 2 day introductory period if the worker's performance fails to satisfy the employer's reasonable expectations, or is otherwise unacceptable.
