- Must be willing to perform short-term, 90-100 days’ work until cotton harvest is complete in area of need served by Silver Creek Gin (Gin) in Yazoo County, Mississippi. Following supervisors’ directions, workers will work in connection with the harvesting of cotton in fields of farmers who have their cotton ginned at the Gin and in connection with the ginning of cotton although they will not perform agricultural labor services inside the Gin building. Workers will handle the cotton through the pickup, loading, hauling, and delivery of cotton modules to the Gin using specialized loading equipment and trailers, organizing the respective farmers’ modules on the Gin premises, moving and loading the cotton modules into the Gin feeders. Making, maintaining and providing records and information to Gin to identify the producer and related information concerning each farmer’s cotton modules. Harvesting and Hauling Cotton – Using specialized lifting and moving loader equipment, workers will move cotton modules within individual farmers’ fields to higher, drier ground as needed, repair tears in module plastic to prevent loss of cotton during transport to the Gin, and will separate moldy, damaged cotton from good cotton, suitable for ginning, leaving cotton not suitable for ginning in the field, communicating with supervisor for directions and solutions if leaving damaged cotton may be prudent. Prepare trucks and trailers for hauling according to Federal and State regulations. After safe loading and securing of cotton, haul raw cotton to Gin, operate heavy equipment in transporting and assist in minor maintenance of equipment (including checking oil, brakes, etc.), perform pre- and post-trip inspections as required under DOT requirements, conduct all safety checks on trucks and equipment. Specialty equipment will be used to spear, move and hoist large, compressed modules of cotton onto a truck trailer that has been braced and modified to hold rectangular modules or cylindrical modules. Specialized lift bed, moving floor trucks can be adjusted in the rear height so water damaged compressed cotton in larger modules can be separated, and cotton suitable for ginning can be loaded onto the trailer and taken to the Gin. Workers will adjust the rear height of the trailer bed so that by backing up the truck with grabbing chains, equipment can skim off and retrieve only the “good” cotton,” leaving cotton not suitable for ginning in field. Hauling time may vary due to the availability of crop, weather conditions, mechanical issues etc. Safety training for use of farm equipment and tractors will be provided. While in the fields, workers make consult with the Employer’s supervisor’s regarding whether to leave wet, moldy or damaged cotton in the field. Workers must be able to copy information from “Gin tag” on each cotton module to record the date the module was made, to confirm the producer and track when the module goes to and arrives at the Gin. It is critical to have each cotton module delivered to the Gin as soon as possible, consistent with safe operation of all equipment. Qualified workers may drive self and other workers between housing and grocery store, 30 miles from housing.
