Job Duties:
Attend to farm/ranch/open range that includes cattle. Attend to beef animals produced for animal products, such as meat , and for increasing the herd(raising calves). Duties may include feeding, watering, herding, grazing, castrating, branding, de-horning, doctoring, loading animals, and monitoring during calving season and assisting with calving when necessary. A farm and ranch worker may maintain records on animals, examine animals to detect diseases and injuries, assist in birth deliveries, and administer medications, vaccinations, or insecticides as appropriate. May clean and maintain animal housing areas. Feed and water livestock and monitor food and water supplies. Herd livestock to pastures or grazing or to trucks for transportation to grazing land. Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease. After care of cow/calf, monitor the ability of the cow to properly “mother” her calf and her calf to properly respond. Calving season is February through May . When calving season starts, monitor the cows and heifers every 2-4 hours, more often if freezing weather. If calf is in distress and cold, bring to the barn and put in the warming box and give colostrum and warm the calf up. Inspect and maintain equipment, including changing oil, checking fluids in the radiator, brakefluid, etc. Putting out mineral and salt when needed. Feeding bales of hay.
