Job Duties:
Transplant, prune, thin, trim, cultivate and harvest plants, shrubs, trees and sod by hand, using hand tools and/or mechanical equipment. Operate horticultural equipment, tractors, nursery vehicles, potting machine, pazzaglia for digging, bobcat, backhoe, fork lift, man lift, and use shears, pruners, hand clippers, shovels, ladders and assorted hand tools. Dig, rake and screen soil and fill cold frames and hot beds in preparation for planting. Identify proper variety and growth stage of cuttings for propagation. Take, prepare and place cuttings for propagation. Cuttings and seedlings are transplanted into pot or ground. Spray, weed, fertilize and water plants, shrubs, trees and sod. Stake and tie plants, shrubs and trees into forms according to individual varietal needs using hand tools. Cultivation of the large tree varieties involves the use of ladders and lifts. Tag, tie, count and prepare plants for digging and shipment. Dig shrubs and trees using shovels, other hand tools and nursery equipment. Wrap root balls of trees with burlap, tie and load. Harvest bare root plants, heel in, load, stack, wash and prepare for shipping. Label, tie, drag, lift, stack and load bare root and potted plants, shrubs and trees onto vans, trailers and trucks. Move containerized shrubs, plants, trees and plant material by hand or using mechanical equipment. Operate tractors, mowers and specialized equipment to harvest and palletize sod. Ride on machine while sod is mechanically harvested and lift, carry and stack sod onto pallets or specified area. Fill growing tanks with water. Install, maintain, regulate and repair irrigation including inspection, adjusting and replacing micro-irrigation tubes and emitters. Dig, rake and prepare irrigation ditches. Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, pine bark media and other materials to condition soil. Clean work areas and maintain grounds. Repair and service equipment along with hand tools. Keep pace while planting on an assembly line and while planting in field walking along side moving wagon. Drive trucks or other vehicles to haul crops, supplies, tools, or farm workers. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. Employer reserves the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able but is unwilling to perform the work necessary for the employer to grow a premium quality product, or for any other lawful reason. Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time.

Bend, stoop, reach and sit for extensive periods of time. Lift, carry and load up to 75 lbs. (two man lift). Climb ladders up to 12 ft. and work on lifts up to 50 ft. Reach over head for extended periods of time while pruning, thinning, trimming and/or shaping trees. Work outside in extremely cold, hot, and/or wet weather conditions. Must be 18 years of age. Hazardous occupation. Drug testing is conducted post-hire at the employer's expense and is not part of the interview process. Negative results are required before starting work.
