Electronic communication: Cell phone service is very good throughout our ranch and workers will be contacted at least once/day (mid-day) to verify well-being. Workers will also be checked on/accounted for when they return to housing at night.
Our ranch covers hundreds of acres. We are not "herders"(ie. sheep/goat) but cattle/horse ranchers. Per our Range Production of Livestock application, I am requesting certification for workers on a temporary seasonal basis for 10 months, therefore I need to have other workers to watch herd 24/7 year-round. H2A workers are notified if additional range help is needed. H2A workers work predominantly (90%+) on range activities which include working cattle, herd management, checking health, changing pastures, etc. on the range NOT near headquarters. These H2A workers perform range duties then return to bunkhouse (close to headquarters) at night, therefore we do not use remote housing for them. These workers are on call 24/7 (as needed per definition of Open Range) for emergencies. Work is full time usually 40 hours/week but are on call 24/7. Range is accessible by horseback & truck. There is very little work performed near the ranch headquarters (10%-) which wold include occasions when livestock have broken into that area, requiring fence repair & herding back to pasture, or if there is an occasional sick animal requiring isolation from herd. 2X/yr cattle are separated & herded to corrals near headquarters for loading for shipment.
