Experienced nursery workers to plant, cultivate and harvest bare root, ball-and-burlap trees and shrubs, containerized trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and perform other duties related to nursery production. Specific duties and skills required include the following:
Plant Cultivation: Through knowledge and judgment, employ proper pruning techniques for wide range of Prides Corner's plant varieties. Exhibit understanding of pruning protocols to ensure uninterrupted availability goals for key crops. Possess ability to identify individual plants that require staking and then decide on the particular staking protocols for that plant. Stick cuttings, transplant plants, pot plants and space plants.
Must possess ability to understand verbal and/or written work instructions. Must be able to understand and identify plants by botanical name and apply proper identification tag.
Some workers employed under this labor certification may be agricultural chemical handlers working under the direct supervision and management of a certified pesticide applicator in accordance with provisions at 40 CFR Part 170, the federal EPA Worker Protection Standard. After training, handler/workers will be expected to be able to ascertain and apply appropriate fertilizer to facilitate plant growth or chemicals to eliminate undesirable growth and pests. Must have a thorough understanding of how to use the personal protective equipment (PPE) Must submit to regular blood testing to monitor for cholinesterase levels. Refusal to wear PPE according to the standard established for each chemical by the WPS is grounds for termination.
Must be able to operate all Prides Corner Farms irrigation pumps and monitor particular crops' water needs to ensure application of correct amount of irrigation water. After training, must be able to determine the order in which the water is run and how many houses can be irrigated at any one time. In other words, must know the limitations of the system so that the water pressure is sufficient so that the system is operating efficiently and keep accurate records of daily water usage on forms.
Plant Harvest and Shipping Activities: Harvest, pack, label, stack and load trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals using techniques appropriate for individual varieties of plants.
Possess ability to determine the exact grades and quantities for selecting trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals for sale. Must be able to measure and understand Prides Corner Farms' appropriate quality standards for each shipment depending on individual customer demands.
Possess ability to identify and select appropriate color picture tags for placement on plants being shipped.
General Nursery Duties: Drive tractors while pulling multiple wagons, including ability to properly back tractors pulling wagons. Work may also include mechanized nursery work using other power equipment. By way of example and not limitation, other power equipment also may include planters, sprayers and other equipment. Workers will be expected to be able to operate agricultural equipment including but not limited to mowers, weed eaters and ATVs as well as daily use of field trucks and tractors with or without direction. At times, under the guidance of a Facilities Technician, workers may be asked to perform repair and maintenance on agricultural equipment.
In the spring, uncover the poly-covered winter plant storage facilities (“hoop houses”). In the fall, consolidate the nursery by grading all plants, picking them up and putting them in hoop houses. Pull lath strips to prepare hoop houses for new poly covers and cover the 50+ linear miles of hoop houses with the poly. Brace the wider houses with 2x4 lumber to prevent them from collapsing under heavy snow load.
Non-supervisory nursery workers may demonstrate tasks to others.
