Work will primarily involve driving trucks (semi-trucks with trailers) and operating mechanized/power equipment. Examples of mechanized power equipment includes but is not limited to tractors, planters, sprayers, cultivators, field/mobile forklifts and other equipment. Workers will be expected to be able to operate agricultural equipment with or without direction, as well as service machinery, trucks and trailers and makes in-field repairs as needed.
Workers will assist in loading trucks with crops and materials weighing up to 75 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet using forklifts. Workers will transport, deliver and unload sod at the customers' locations using a mobile forklift.
Operation of commercial-sized motor vehicles (semi truck with 48' flatbed trailer) is integral to this job. Columbus Turf Nursery, Inc. requires that a successful applicant possess a valid CDL as a condition of employment. Workers must maintain a valid CDL for operating semi trucks with trailers and a clean driving record throughout employment and comply with applicable requirements of the United States Department of Transportation regulations. A clean driving record has no disqualifying factors under applicable law or under Columbus Turf Nursery, Inc.'s motor vehicle insurance policy. Examples of disqualifying factors include, but are not limited to, conviction for driving under the influence, driving while impaired or the occurrence of a serious at-fault accident.
As required by law, Columbus Turf Nursery, Inc. complies with all applicable laws and regulations related to motor carrier safety, including those promulgated by the United States Department of Transportation. Using the services of a third party, Columbus Turf Nursery, Inc. uniformly conducts a motor vehicle records check as part of the hiring process. The motor vehicle records check assesses whether the applicant has a clean driving record and whether he is legally entitled to operate commercial motor vehicles in the United States.
Columbus Turf Nursery, Inc. has a drug policy that requires pre-employment testing, as well as post-employment employer-paid random, upon suspicion and post-accident testing. These policies are carried out uniformly for all employees, both foreign and domestic. Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines require pre-employment drug testing for all truck drivers. Because all employees hired pursuant to this application must have an appropriate driver's license to permit driving of trucks, drug testing is required to meet this standard. Tests are conducted in accordance with DOT standards after the initial employment offer has been extended and accepted. Drug testing is not required as part of the interview process, but any worker who fails a mandatory drug test or is unable to obtain the required licensing as a result will be terminated.
Workers may be offered other agricultural duties associated with sod farming pursuant to the job description in this application. These duties may include fertilizer/pestacide application, farm maintenance, planting, propogating, plant handling, and harvesting. This will be a de minimus amount of work involved over the course of the season and is available only when driving/delivering sod is unavailable, and all such hours worked will be compensated at the adverse effect wage rate applicable at the time the work is performed.
Workers should be physically able to do the driving (as well as other incidental duties) required. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray, related chemicals, etc. may affect workers' ability to perform the job. Workers are exposed to wet weather early in the morning through the heat of the day, working in fields. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations.
