Job Duties:

Perform manual labor to plant, harvest, stage, grade, sort and pack Vidalia onions, squash, greens, watermelon, cucumber, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, tomatoes, sweet corn, green beans, cauliflower, eggplant, jalapeno, kale, cabbage, broccoli and pecans. Pull, bundle, bag and throw bags of onions onto wagon that is moving through the field. Ride on wagon and toss out bundles of onions to be planted. Place onion plant into predug hole and cover up hole with hand. Open fields by moving onions from one row to another row to open up a driveway for the machinery. Hand harvest onions. Clip top and bottom of onion, place in bucket, once bucket is full worker will carry to dumper. Count and check onions. Dumper will empty bucket and give the harvester back the empty bucket with a token/ticket. Onions are unloaded at the packing house to be graded and packed. Bed sweet potatoes into the dirt and place plastic paper over the beds. Use shovels to shovel dirt onto the beds that are covered with plastic. Remove paper from the beds and put a remake paper over the beds. After the potato plants sprout and come through the ground, cut the plants with a butcher knife. Place the plants into plastic crates. Load crates of slips onto a flatbed trailer. Ride a transplanter to transplant plants. Manually feed the potato plants into the fingers on the transplanter that places the plant into the ground and covers the root of the plant with dirt. Walk behind the transplanter and plant slips by hand using a stick. Ride a potato digger or harvester and pick up potatoes off of a chain, sort them, and place them into boxes on the digger while harvesting. Hand pick tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and eggplants and pick up pre-dug pototoes and sweet potatoes according to supervisors instructions. Place produce into bucket, once bucket is full worker will carry to dumper. Count and check produce. Dumper will empty bucket and give the harvester back the empty bucket with a token/ticket depending upon crop. Produce will be graded during harvest and packed in the field or taken to packing house to be graded and packed. Plant watermelon and cantaloupe by hand placing seed into pre-dug hole and covering hole with dirt. Walk through field, cut watermelon off of vine and turn sideways according to supervisor's instructions. Go back through the field or 2nd group of workers will walk through field and pick up pre-cut watermelons and toss to another worker that will catch the watermelon and place gently into a bus. Watermelons are taken to the packing house and unloaded onto a conveyor to be graded and packed. Lay and/or remove plastic. Grade, sort or classify harvested products on an assembly line according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Discard inferior or defective products and or foreign matter while leaving acceptable products on conveyer for further processing. Place products in containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. Close containers/boxes and record grade and/or identification numbers. Measure, weigh and count products and materials. Stack boxes/containers onto pallet. Plant broccoli. Harvest broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower with a knife cutting at the base and either tossed into bins or a bulk wagon, or placed into boxes in the field and loaded onto trailers. Cut, pick up and toss produce into wagon that will be taken to the barn. Unload produce to be packed. Cut, bundle, band and toss bundled greens including kale into wagon and receive a token for each bundle. Hand pick green beans and place into crate and place crate onto wagon. Crate will be weighed and a token will be given to worker for each 33 lb crate. Pull corn off of stalk and place into crate. Once 48-ear crate is full, close lid and twist wire to hold closed. Take crate to worker on wagon and worker on wagon will take crate and stack on wagon.

Special Requirements:

Three months of verifiable farmwork experience required. Work outside in extreme weather conditions including hot, cold and/or wet weather. Walk, bend, stoop, push and pull and reach for extended periods of time. Lift, carry and load up to 50 lbs. Employer is a drug-free workplace. Drug testing is conducted post-hire at the employers expense and is not part of the interview process. Must be 18 years old or older.

Incentive-Vidalia onion, pullers, per bundle bag (95-100 plants/bag). Estimated hourly wage equivalent is $16.25/hr base on average 13 piece rate units per hour. Actual piece rate earnings depend on individual factors. Guaranteed $AEWR/hr
