- Job Duties:
- Operate trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport workers from housing (whether on or off farm) to the farm properties; haul tools, supplies, or crops; transport workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including on public roads to reach farmer’s fields and/or transport workers to the grocery store, or bank on an as-needed basis. Load agricultural products into trucks, and drive trucks to market or storage facilities. Not all workers are requested to drive; drivers will be required to possess a valid operators license. No one will be rejected for the position that does not possess a class D license. Manually prune, plant, cultivate, & harvest fruit & vegetables such as but not limited to: apples, peaches, berries, squash, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, kale, & swiss chard. Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, & knives. Duties include mowing, tilling soil & applying fertilizers; transplanting, weeding, thinning, pruning crops & pressing cider. Clean & bunch all fresh picked vegetables. Pot plants into plastic nursery containers. Weed & space container plants. Load & unload container plants from trucks. Pick up garbage left in orchard from customers during apple picking season. Keep farm stand clean and organized. Identify plants, pests, & weeds to determine the selection & application of pesticides & fertilizers. Apply non-restricted pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers to crops. Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, & self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow & fertilize soil or to plant, cultivate, spray & harvest crops. Repair & maintain farm vehicles, implements & mechanical equipment. Construct trellises; repair fences & farm buildings. Set up & operate irrigation equipment. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Harvest fruits & vegetables by hand. Pick apples for fresh marketing and/or processing. Inform farmers or farm manager of crop progress. Record information about crops, such as pesticides use, yields or costs. A minimum productivity standard applies; 80 bu boxes of fresh market apples per day. (After 4 days of training. All fruit to be handled with care to avoid bruising. Fruit injured by bruising, not to exceed 1%. Workers instructed to selectively pick mature fruit and vegetables according to size, color & other USDA standards. Workers must be physically able to pick tree fruit, most of which is done from ladders with lower branches being picked from the ground. Picked fruit is placed in a metal-framed canvas covered picking bucket with canvas straps that slip over the head and rest on the shoulders. Filled buckets weighing up to 60 lbs. is emptied into bulk bins with a capacity equal to 20-bushel boxes. Workers required to handle ladders up to 24 long and weighing about 2 lbs per foot. Must be physically able to lift to 75 lbs on a consistent basis throughout the work day. Employer may conduct/require random illegal drug or alcohol tests at employer?s expense after hiring, for the safety of themselves and others as they will be operating machinery. Failure to comply with request or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in termination. Due to health & safety concerns relating to pesticide application & the operation of equipment on our farm, workers must understand basic instructions in English. Workers referred as a result of this order must have a minimum of six months verifiable experience in performing the tasks described in this order.
