Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
27
Job Duties:
Perform manual labor to plant, cultivate, harvest, grade, pack and load bell pepper, asparagus, tomatoes, eggplant, squash, cucumber, pickling cucumber and zucchini by hand and machine. Transplant crops by either riding on the back of a transplanter and feeding transplants carefully through fingers of the transplanter that places the plant into the ground and covers the root of the plant with soil, or by walking and carrying trays through assigned rows in the field while bending and stooping to carefully place the transplants into pre-dug holes and covering roots with soil. Manually harvest tomatoes by pulling tomatoes of the correct size and maturity from the vine, placing into bucket and carrying full buckets to dumpers riding on trailers moving alongside rows. Full buckets weighing approximately 35 lbs. will then be lifted and dumped into bins. Vine-ripe tomatoes will then be graded and sorted into individual RPC bins based on color and size before being stacked onto trailers in the field. Stems will be removed from harvested tomatoes. Workers will not break skin of tomato, drop tomato, or leave any appropriate product on the vine during harvest. Peppers, squash, zucchini, eggplant and cucumbers will be manually harvested by either picking into baskets, carrying full baskets to dumpers riding on trailers moving alongside rows, and dumping into bins, or by picking and placing sorted produce into boxes, and stacking full boxes onto the trailers. Harvest asparagus by walking through rows and stooping to select spears of the correct grade as instructed by the supervisor, using a knife to cut spear at the base, gathering multiple spears in hand, chopping the woody ends of the spear group with a knife, placing into basket, carrying and dumping full baskets into crates in the field. Lay, tuck and/or remove plastic. Clean plastic of debris. Participate in irrigation activities including setting up, repairing, operating and maintaining drip and other irrigation equipment. Manually pull weeds and remove used stakes and string. Stake, string, tie, prune, sucker, thin and prune crops, as instructed by supervisor. Remove or clean plant debris or vines from ground or trellises. Train vines or plants on strings or trellises. Use hand tools such as shovels, tampers, pruning hooks, machetes, hoes and knives. Till soil. Clear and maintain fields and irrigation ditches. Workers must select harvestable produce based on correct size, maturity and quality. Workers will not break skin, damage, drop or bruise produce, or leave any appropriate product on the plant during harvest. Work in groups to harvest crops with agricultural equipment that is moving through the field along with workers while being careful not to damage harvested product. Workers must complete their own assigned rows as instructed by supervisor. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Non-latex gloves are provided at no cost and are strongly recommended to be worn. Long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended when harvesting to avoid contamination and skin irritation. Workers must discard and destroy produce that has been in contact with blood. Any produce harvested or still on the plant that has been exposed to blood shall be discarded and destroyed. Workers must pass by or discard any produce that bears obvious signs of pest activity, fecal contamination, plant disease, or physical damage, or any produce that has been dropped on the ground. Workers must wash buckets to avoid unnecessary introduction of soil into harvest containers and field bins, or onto tools or other harvesting equipment.
