John Deere Corp. mechanics' certification desirable but not required. Workers will plant seeds and/or plants using various vacuum planters and planting machinery in seasonal holding houses and in the fields: In the seasonal holding houses, workers will use the Blackmore Needle Seeder (this machine uses customized hollow needles and a vacuum pump to pick up seeds from a vibrating tray and sends the flats full of dirt through the machine as the needles deposit a seed into every cell in the flat). In the field, workers will plant approximately 60-100 acres of sweet corn using the Ferris Field Planter (a tractor-pulled machine with a GPS unit which simultaneously lays plastic and fertilizer, pokes holes in the plastic, and plants the seed). Also, in the field, workers in crews of six will use a carousel planter (a tractor-pulled machine with a GPS unit), for planting. Each worker will drop plants into rotating holes where it travels down a shoot and is planted by the planter. Workers may also plant a cover crop in fields post-harvest, such as rye seed while operating the John Deer tractor and seed drill. Workers may be offered other general agricultural duties associated with fruit/vegetable farming, including building upkeep/maintenance, building and repairing fences, mowing around barns and similar tasks. Workers may also serve as crew leaders or points of contact for their individual areas throughout the season. Workers may be responsible for some paperwork including food safety activities and harvest activities. Workers will perform equipment maintenance including changing oil, transmission fluids and other basic functions. Workers will operate machinery in the field for long periods of time. Workers may assist in loading trucks with packaged produce or machinery equipment, such as propane tanks or tools weighing from 50 to 60 pounds and lifting such weights to a height of 5 feet. Workers will build, cover/uncover and maintain greenhouses. Workers are exposed to wet weather, early mornings, summer heat, and cold fall weather. Temperatures may range from 10 degrees to 100 degrees. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations.
