- Job Duties:
- Following supervisors’ instructions workers will shovel, haul, spread manure, and dig holes, ditches, and trenches. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, drill, and knives. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, mowing, transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops, and cleaning, grading, packing, and loading harvested product. The packing house is located on the farm. May repair fences and farm buildings and participate in irrigation activities. Workers will operate equipment. Workers will operate vehicles, tractors, lawn mowers, and hi boy tractor. Care, feeding and watering of animals. Workers will also work on farm packing control. Manually plant, cultivate and harvest vegetables, produce, horticultural specialties and field crops (green beans, green peppers, jalapenos, onions, blueberries, muskmelon, watermelon, potatoes, peaches, cucumbers, tomatoes etc.). Pumpkins - Workers must perform manual labor to hand cut and pack pumpkins. Pumpkins must be handled carefully to avoid cuts and bruises to fruit. Workers must cut the fruit off the vine with pruning shears leaving a 3 to 4-inch handle on the pumpkins. Never carry the fruit by their stems. Duties also include cleaning, loading, and unloading harvested products. Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, appearance, feel and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Clean and maintain work areas. Apples - The worker will place a picking sack over their shoulder and carry an 18' to 22' ladder from the field truck to the area of the grove to be harvested. A fully loaded sack weighs between approximately 80 and 100 pounds, depending upon the size, condition, and variety of fruit. Worker positions ladder against the tree and within reach of the fruit in a leaning position, taking care not to break limbs, damage the tree, knock off fruit, or interfere with other workers, in a secure position to prevent slipping or falling and possible injury to themselves or other workers. Worker will remove fruit from the tree and place into pick sack. Apple production includes, picking and washing apples, putting skewers in apples, and then putting them in plastic bubble and applying labels. Sweet Corn - Test each ear for ripeness. Juice from the kernels should be milky white and the kernels should be soft. The silk on the ears should have turned dark brown. The ears should be firm. Kernels on the tips of the unhusked ears should be plump and milky. Grasp the ear firmly and pull down, then twist and pull. Pull up the corn stalks immediately after harvest. Cut the stalks into 1-foot lengths before adding them to the compost pile to hasten their decay. Workers may use a corn shucker to shuck corn. May prepare sweet corn to be bagged and frozen. May also harvest popcorn to be bagged. Perform minor repairs and maintenance of farm property and equipment. Load trucks with finished and cleaned produce. Mow hay. Assist in trellis installation, set up tents for temporary shade at/near work station or for temporary produce storage. Flowers: Workers will be asked to cut bouquets and arrange them for retail. Some flowers will be hung to dry and later remove buds/petals. Bagging buds and petals. Flowers must be handled delicately through the entire harvest process. Planting and transplanting flowers in and around the farm’s designated flower production areas. Packing and cleaning harvested gains. Maintaining clean bathrooms on the farm. Occasional weed-whacking or general landscaping around fences, buildings, gardens, fields, orchards, vineyards, or animal pens. Sheer Christmas trees with machetes. Clean and set up production areas for each season. Bring trash bags to the farm’s dumpster when full.
