1, Readying soil for seeding of commodities that ultimately are used for harvesting for feed or for grazing (80%)
a. Erosion Control: Employee will install the following: o Vegetation (Temporary/Permanent seed) o Silt Fence o Check Dam o Wattle o Flexible Concrete Matting o Low Water Crossing (Geotextile & Stone)
b. Brush Management: (see Practice Specification: Code 314)
Employee will engage in removal of all green growth and above ground foliage. Root plow to a sufficient depth to undercut the plant to bring roots to surface. Stack and or burn top growth as needed. Depending on brush type, Employer uses their sheep herd to control sprouts.
c. Field Border Requirements – Code 386: Workers will plant field borders consisting of trees, shrubs, and/or grasses around the edges of cropland, hayfields, and/or pastures to reduce erosion, improve water quality, provide turning areas for farm equipment, and create wildlife habitat.
d. Filter Strip Requirements – Code 393: Workers will plant and fertilize herbaceous vegetation.
e. Contour Buffer Strips – Code 332: Workers will plant and fertilize permanent vegetation consisting of grasses, legumes/forbs, or grass-legume/forb mixtures.
f. Contour Farming – Code 330: • Workers will align ridges, furrows, and roughness formed by tillage, planting and other operations at a grade near the contour to alter the velocity or the direction of water flow.
g. Herbaceous Weed Treatment (Ac.) (315) Conservation Practice Standard: Workers will apply treatments, under a credentialed pesticide user program, used in farming and ranching properly and safely by following either written or verbal directions for mixing, applying and storing chemical compounds according to specifications. The purpose of the above is to protect soil and control erosion, reduce fine fuel loads and wildlife hazard, control pervasive plant species, address the need for forage, wildlife habitat and water quality, and improve rangeland health.
These aforementioned activities are to “ready” the soil for seeding permanent or temporary grazing acreage for goats, sheep, and beef cows.
2. Permanent and Temporary Seeding for purposes of harvesting for feed or for grazing
Once the land has been primed to make it ready for seeding, workers will hand till all the acreage. Once tilled, worker will seed by hand by spreading seed evenly among tilled dirt. Once seed is spread, workers will rake the entire tiled area to work the seeds into the soil. Upon completion of seeding, the workers will hand water seeds
In some instances, the worker plant grass plugs. Workers will manually set each grass plug on the ground above where they are to be planted. Workers manually dig the holes, place fertilizer in the holes, and then water. Once plug is planted, then workers must go thru field to fill the rest of the hole with soil, covering the entire root ball to prevent it from drying out
KerTec engages in planting agricultural commodities such as spring oats, oats, wheat, triticale, rye, hay gazer, pearl millet, milo, Sudan grass, teff, bermudagrass and native grass, These commodities are harvested as feed for goats, cattle and sheep, while others, once sufficiently established are used as grazing acreage.
Sheep Herding/Grazing (non-range 20%). The sheep duties will be performed within driving distance, no overnight stays on the range. Daily feeding, making sure all animals eat and drink every day. Provide water for animals, including minor maintenance of water troughs and water lines. Ability to identify herd health issues and nutrition.
