Job Duties:
All job duties are closely and directly related to the production of livestock. Perform any combination of the following tasks attending to livestock: adhere to safety and animal handling procedures dictated by the employer; administer emergency minor medical care to sick/injured pregnant animals using roping methods to gently immobilize animal without causing undue stress; administer medication as needed; affix halters to calves and mature cattle; apply herbicides to noxious, invasive and poisonous plant species on grazing areas; assist in the maintenance of tools, equipment and handling facilities necessary to production; assist with branding and tagging calves and with the vaccination of cattle by herding into corrals and/or stalls or manually restraining animals; assist with castration of livestock; assist with hauling water when winter and drought conditions eliminate natural sources of water for livestock; assist with hoof trimming to reduce the occurrence of discomfort and disease; attend to pregnant livestock and newborn offspring in hot fall months and cold winter months; brand, tag, clip or otherwise mark young animals for identification purposes; repair and/or maintain fence and facilities to ensure the safety and health of animals and forage; care for newly born offspring; care for young offspring by drying them off, mixing and feeding supplemental milk, treating umbilical cords, vaccinating, splinting, and cleaning feeding equipment and the lamb barn; deliver feed and supplements to livestock and operate the appropriate equipment required to ensure adequate provision of both; deliver water to livestock through hot summer months using large water trucks; ensure newly born calves stand and nurse; ensure newly born offspring stand and nurse; evaluate and adjust feed rations for livestock according to body condition and season of production; examine animals to detect diseases and injuries; feed and water and ensure adequate provision of both; feed, water and tend to the dogs (both guard and working dogs); feed, water and tend to the dogs (both guard and working dogs) and horses; handle livestock using low stress methods; identify livestock that are preparing to give birth; keep accurate record of new calves born; lift and stack bales of hay and sacks of grain and mineral onto a feed truck or wagon; report to employer dehydration & other indicators of deterioration in animal body condition/behavioral changes indicating malnutrition or disease; set up, tear down and move temporary electric fence used to contain livestock in a specific area; tend calves and mature cattle in barn; use proper animal husbandry skills to prevent heat stress/hypothermia/abortion/death.

Required to: to operate equipment and machinery required to perform job duties indicated in a safe and responsible manner, perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision, work outdoors in all types of weather and may experience occasional exposure to hazards such as poisonous snakes, biting insects and extreme temperature, to maintain equipment and machinery to a standard established by the employer, work with and around farm machinery such as tractors, UTVs and ATVs for supplemental feeding purposes and movement of livestock, work with and around farm machinery such as tractors for haying and supplemental feeding purposes and ATVs for irrigating and the movement of livestock, handle animals using low stress handling methods.
