- Job Duties:
- The farmworker position includes duties associated with the planting, cultivation, harvesting carrots. This work can require standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting to 50 pounds for long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. This work requires adherence to important food safety and quality standard operating procedures and the ability to work quickly and consistently alongside fellow workers with a positive, professional, team-based attitude and a consideration for the safety and health of fellow workers and of the consumers who will purchase the various nursery products. Workers will assist in loading carrots into transplanters from field transportation. Workers will place seedling carrots into pre-punched holes in the ground while they are riding on the planting equipment. While using the mechanical transplanter, workers will place carrot seedlings in carousel that drops the individual plants into the hole in the ground. Workers will walk behind the transplanter machine to verify that carrots are placed at proper depth and orientation. Workers will perform shoveling, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks associated with the production of carrots. Plant, transplant, cultivate, harvest, and/or grade and pack carrots. Grade, sort or classify carrots according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Discard inferior or defective products and/or foreign matter while leaving acceptable products on conveyer for further processing. Carrots continue to be carried through the process on a conveyer where machines will weigh, count
and package products. Tie, label and stack on pallets according to the supervisor’s instructions or pack in boxes. Once the box is full, slide down rollers, close, seal and stack the box onto a pallet and place a new box on the conveyer to be packed. Record packing information. Examine and inspect containers, materials, and products to ensure that packing specifications are met. Remove completed or defective products from pallets and place in the assigned area. Monitor
and load materials into package processing equipment. Dump untied bags of carrots back into the machine to go through the process again. Clean, pack and load harvested products; place produce into coolers.
