Job Duties:
Planting and harvesting sugar cane, crawfish, rice and soybeans. Planting sugar cane involves walking behind a tractor and throwing cane on the rows for long periods of time in temperatures that sometimes exceed 100 degrees.Some tractor driving Sugar can harvesting tractor driving and operation of the cane cutter and loader. Crawfish seeding involves use of a four wheeler and wading in the ponds to empty sacks of the seed crawfish Crawfish harvesting involves use of a push-boat, operation of a four wheeler, bagging , washing, loading , weighing and storage of the crawfish. Both jobs involve stooping, bending, heavy lifting (must be able to lift 80 pounds) and working out side in inclement weather. Also routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment. Crawfish seeding runs mid August through late August. Sugar cane planting starts mid August and runs through mid October. sugar cane harvest starts mid September and runs through mid January. Crawfish harvest starts in mid January and runs through mid June. Rice planting repairing the levees of the ponds after the crawfish are harvested and maintaining the water levels in the ponds. Rice harvesting involves tractor driving, pulling grain carts to the trucks so rice can be hauled to grain bins on the farms, operation of a combine Soybean planting begins in mid Spring and runs though mid June. It involves plowing the land, planting the crop and spraying the fields. Soybeans harvest begins in mid August and ends in mid to late September. It involves tractor driving, operation of a combine, pulling grain carts to haul the soybeans from the field to the grain bins on the farm. All workers are needed for the entire 10 months period to perform these duties.
