Job Duties:

Workers will perform all job duties according to the instruction and supervision of the farm manager, horse trainers, riders and senior staff. Extremely specific instructions may be given regarding care for particular horses, sometimes on a daily basis. Care and attention to safety must be exercised at all times when working with the horses and equipment. Workers should be able to stand, bend, stoop and work for prolonged periods of time and be physically fit to perform duties as assigned. Workers must be able to endure manual labor through extreme variant weather conditions, between temperatures of 10 and over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high humidity, wind, rain, sleet, snow, etc. Workers must appear promptly at or before the designated start time on each workday and competently perform a full day of work until the designated end time. Workers should be able to regularly lift 50lbs and occasionally lift up to 100lbs, when unloading hay for example. Workers should be able to see, walk, run, squat, hear, and speak. Worker will occasionally climb into loft or up ladders. Workers will attend to live horses. Identify and catch horses in stalls and fields, affix halters and lead ropes, lead into barn and tie securely and turn back out or load/unload for trailering. Competence in daily grooming practices including bathing, brushing, picking feet, painting hoofs, clipping, changing halters, pulling manes, and hot toweling. Break and train horses: equipping horse for by applying blankets and tack to horse to prepare for exercise rider. Mount and exercise horse in walking ring and on track. Clean stalls by removing soiled bedding and manure by pitchfork into wheelbarrow, empty wheelbarrow by pushing up a ramp into muck wagon; this may weigh in excess of 100lbs, and then replace with fresh bedding. Strip stalls and disinfect floors, walls and surrounding areas. Sweep and rake barn aisles multiple times daily. Clean stall areas and ceilings to remove dirt, hay, cobwebs and other duties. Empty, clean and refill 5 gallon water buckets for each stall. Clean and refill feed tubs. Fill feed cart (bags of feed weigh 50lbs each). Handle basic feeding activities including apportioning grain, hay and feed supplements according to instruction. Treat and care for sick or injured horses by observing and identifying sick or injured horses and applying bandages, wrapping legs, administering vaccinations and medications. Assist farrier in trimming feet and shoeing horses. Hold horses for farriers and veterinarians. Use shiftneys and shanks in leading horses. Assist in preparing stalls and farm grounds for owners, clients, and visitors. Setting up feed and hay storage, and supply room, setting up bathing and grooming stations; hand walking yearlings for exercise and cool down from training. Preparing and holding horses for presentation to owners, clients, visitors, and for photographer. Help move bales of hay from storage to barns; bales weigh between 50-100 lbs. Workers may be required to perform additional duties to help maintain property, including grounds, fencing, barns and buildings. Use of basic hand and power tools may be necessary. Painting and preparing surfaces for paint. Mowing, weedeating, installation and pruning of small trees and plants. General Conditions: The anticipated range of hours for different seasonal activities is 45 to 60 hours per week on a rotating basis and split shifts every other day. Agricultural overtime rules apply. Workers will report to work at designated time and place as directed by assigned employer each day, starting as early as 5:30am. Weekend work is required. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available. Down time: Workers may encounter occasional periods of little or no work because of weather or other conditions beyond the employers control. These periods can occur any time throughout the season.
