Job Duties:
The farm work position includes duties associated with the planting, harvesting, and packing of sweet potatoes. This work can require standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds for long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. It also includes making important decisions based on size, coloring, and ripeness according to prescribed standards. This work requires adherence to important food safety and quality standard operating procedures and the ability to work quickly and consistently alongside fellow workers with a positive, professional, team-based attitude and a consideration for the safety and health of fellow workers and of the consumers who will purchase and consume the fresh produce grown, harvested, packed, and shipped from the farm. Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potato plant pullers will stoop, bend and kneel to pull sweet potato plants from beds, exercising care in selecting plants of appropriate size as specified by supervisor. Selected plants will be boxed in an orderly fashion in field crates and crates windrowed and loaded onto trailers for transport. Potatoes will be graded and packed in packing shed. Workers may ride mechanical transplanter and may walk behind transplanter to reset missing plants. Sweet potato harvest workers will walk along rows that have been previously plowed. Workers will stoop, bend and kneel to pick up sweet potatoes using hands and and fingers to dig out unexposed potatoes. Damaged or diseased potatoes will not be harvested. Workers may be required to perform other duties as required by the employer. Field Maintenance: Workers will be responsible for general field maintenance. They will rake up debris from the land such as sticks, straw, etc. They will be responsible for the removal of old and unproductive plants. They must take care to not damage or destroy other plants or property in the area. Workers involved in field maintenance may be required to perform various tasks such as irrigation, ditching, hoeing, spreading fertilizer, picking up roots and limbs, drip tape and black plastic, repairing 20 bushel field bins.stripping unwanted growth from plants, weeding, and using hand sprayers in fields. Tractor and Forklift Operation During Field & Packing Operations: Workers may be required to operate forklifts or tractors during field operations as an incidental. Before any worker is required to operate a tractor or forklift, the worker will be instructed in the proper and safe operation. Workers will be required to operate forklifts and tractors according to instructions and in a manner that protects the operator, other workers and equipment. Repeated failure to obey operating and safety instructions may result in termination. Workers may drive 4wheel trucks from plant beds, fields, and barn.
