- Job Duties:
- Work duties include feeding, watering, herding, penning, observing cattle for signs of fear or distress, monitoring herd for health issues, give vaccinations, assist with birthing and caring for calves. Regularly assess the body condition of cattle (body condition scoring). Care for, saddle and ride horses used in herding cattle. Maintain quiet calm demeanor working around cattle in close quarters (cattle pens and facilities). Recognize typical signs that will indicate parturition in cows or heifers. Make sure that all birthing pens, chutes, and calving stalls are clean, dry, strong, safe, and functioning correctly; medicine chest has all things necessary and other items that may be wanted. Be familiar with birthing protocol plan of what to do, when to do it, who to call for help, and how to know when help is needed. May assist to castrate, apply ID tags, brand. Unload and store feed and supplies. Perform general farm labor jobs: maintenance on farm equipment (clean, oil, repair); repair fences; repair farm buildings (sheds, barns, etc.); muck stalls etc., keep work areas and electric fence areas clean and free from debris. Able to operate a side by side (ATV, UTV), small tractor with loader, and a large row crop tractor.
