- We are a primarily livestock operation, but we farm for our own feed products. Our position can be considered seasonal because crops are planted and cattle are out to graze on grass by the 15th of June, which will be our contract end date. From June 15th to August 15th, help is not needed because the cattle require minimal maintenance while grazing and can be cared for by myself, and any spraying of the crops is usually hired out. After the 15th of August, work begins for preparation of weaning of calves and then feed production (silage, harvest) begins the following month of September. Job duties will include: preparing fields for planting, attaching farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors using bolts and hand tools, operating tractors, planters, seed drills, manure spreaders, and other farm equipment, engaging in planting, weeding, spraying, and/or harvesting activities, loading and unloading crops or materials manually or using conveyors, hand trucks, forklifts, or transfer augers, loading hoppers, containers, or conveyors to feed machines with products using forklifts, transfer augers, suction gates, shovels, or pitchforks, manipulating controls to set, activate, and adjust mechanisms on machinery, mixing specified materials or chemicals and dumping solutions, powders, or seeds into machinery, observing and listening to machinery operation to detect equipment malfunctions, weighing crop-filled containers, and recording weights and other identifying information, attaching equipment extensions or accessories, loading and unloading crops, operating equipment to harvest crops, driving farm trucks to haul crops, supplies, and tools, inspecting, adjusting, and completing routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, cleaning stalls, pens, and equipment using disinfectant solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, or pumps, driving farm trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed to animals, examining animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and checking physical characteristics such as rate of weight gain, feeding and watering livestock, and monitoring food and water supplies, herding livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, farm trucks, or other enclosures, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fencing, marking livestock to identify ownership and grade using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos, mixing feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions, moving equipment or livestock from one location to another manually or using farm trucks or carts, patrolling grazing lands on horseback or using all-terrain vehicles, performing duties related to livestock reproduction such as breeding animals within appropriate timeframes, performing artificial inseminations, and helping with animal births, providing medical treatment such as administering medications and vaccinations, or arranging for veterinarians to provide more extensive treatment, shifting animals between grazing areas to ensure that they have sufficient access to food, caring for animals, cleaning equipment or facilities, examining animals to detect illness, injury, or other problems, maintaining inventories of materials, equipment, or products, operating farming equipment, transporting animals, crops, or equipment, and treating animal injuries or illnesses. Employer may provide performance bonuses at the end of the contract at the employer’s discretion.
