Job Duties:

Workers will be planting, cultivating, maintaining, and harvesting horticultural products on farms. Duties include the manual and mechanized production of nursery stock, including bedding plants, trees, shrubs, greenhouse-grown specialty plants, and other horticultural varieties. Workers will be expected to prepare fields and soil, as well as plant and propagate a variety of crops and nursery stock including seedlings, liners, and specialty trees and plants. Workers will be responsible for all aspects of planting, cultivating, and hand-harvesting vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, tomato, and squash crops. Maintain plants by irrigating, weeding, and removing cull stock, debris, vines, and other unwanted growth using hand tools and equipment such as rakes, shovels, hoes, and tractors. Install/maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Move and install irrigation pipes and equipment. Dig and maintain ditches. Install and remove levee gates. Apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other crop protectants. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate and crop conditions. Load and unload products from trucks and conveyor belts. Pack, label, tag, and store plants according to their variety. Perform pre-harvest activities such as laying plastic, planting, pruning, staking, and irrigation. Post-harvest activities include pulling plastic, stake removal, cutting string, and field clean-up. Must be able to lift and carry up to 65 lbs. One (1) month of previous crop or greenhouse experience required.
