Job Duties:

The experience required is necessary in order to ensure the safety of both the workers and the horses. Anything less than 3 months does not allow an individual to gain experience in all areas associated with breeding, gestation, post natal care of mares and foals, care and training of yearlings, and sales prepping. Additionally, these are not ordinary livestock but thoroughbreds that are entrusted to our care and/or sell for top dollar. 1. Monitor horses recognizing signs of colic, lameness and sickness in general and take the appropriate action depending on the situation. 2. Catch unhalter broke foals, hold to take temperature, check babies navels, medicate if necessary, hold foals for veterinarian and farrier. 3. Medicate broodmares and yearlings including oral and injectable medications. 4. Hold broodmares and assist the vet in performing reproductive palpitations and ultrasounds. 5. Hold broodmares in the breeding shed and hold broodmares to be teased. 6. Recognize signs of a broodmare in labor and assist with delivery. 7. Teach unhalter broke yearlings and foals to lead, be bathed and groomed. 8. Bathe and groom sales yearlings and school yearlings on how to walk, set up and show for the sale. 9. Halter and walk mares, yearlings, and foals. 10. Safely handle unhalter broke mares, yearlings and foals. 11. Ability to catch unhalter broke mares, yearlings and foals in the paddock. 12. Recognize signs of disease and treat accordingly on sales yearlings. 13. Hold yearlings for the vet and assist with x-rays and scopes. 14. Feed, hay and water horses. 15. Clean, lime and rebed stalls. 16. Load any type of horse into a horse trailer Three months of experience, which must include experience with all of the following: horse breeding, foaling, halter breaking, handling foals, sales prep, medicating broodmares and yearlings, assisting veterinarians, and training, bathing, and grooming yearlings
