- Job Duties:
- Following the supervisor’ instructions, workers will be planting/harvesting, loading, unloading, stacking, and shipping fruits and vegetables, while also working in the greenhouses. The worker’s main responsibility is to handle food products and follow directions for proper cleanliness standards. Employees are required to cleanse their hands by washing them thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before entering the field, greenhouses, and packing houses. All packing houses are located on each growers’ farm with 100% of their products being processed. Workers will perform crop mowing weekly during growing time to bulk up plant barrels. May also be asked to push either side of a six-foot wide mower that spans the width of the greenhouses sub-irrigation beds. Workers will also inspect field irrigation systems; replace damaged pipes, valves, water jets, sprinklers, etc. using necessary equipment. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers/pesticides, transplanting, pulling weeds, raking, cleaning around shed area, thinning or pruning crops, cleaning, grading, and packing harvested product. Workers will clear ground of rocks, sticks, roots, brush, and trees. Manually weeding fields using hand tools & other farm tools. Workers must perform manual labor to pull plastic from the field and load onto trailer. To decrease the amount of walking time spent by the worker in taking their filled boxes back to the crate shed located at the end of the row, the employer may utilize a mechanical harvester aide. This machine has a conveyor belt wings that move ahead of the workers as they walk down their row filling their containers. When the containers in the boxes are filled, the worker places the filled box on the conveyor belt and retrieves a new box with containers. Empty boxes and containers are stored on the machine. Duties may vary from time to time. Workers may also be required to shovel, haul, spread manure, dig holes, ditches, and trenches. May construct trellises, repair farm fences, and existing buildings; replace damaged posts using wire stretchers, hammers, paint, brushes, etc. Load mulch on trailer and move to fields, unload, and spread mulch around plants as needed. Inspect the field to maintain a 3 to 5 foot weed free strip between rows by removing weeds, grass, etc. Inspect bushes for damage, disease, or insect infestation and remove or replace as directed by farm manager. May be asked to transport containers (lugs) from the field to other job sites via tractor (located on farm). Hand Labor Work: The workers’ main responsibility is to handle food products and follow directions for proper cleanliness standards. Other responsibilities but not limited to include placing blueberries and/or vegetables on dump belt for inspection, stacking lugs, light housekeeping such as sweeping culls off floor during production and removing cull containers from the floor of property. Employees will be trained in daily operations such as safety, food defense, security, hygiene, and sanitation according to food safety rules and regulations. Workers may be required to work at night due to heat. Appropriate clothing must be worn at all times to perform job duties. For all tasks, workers must be able to: stand on their feet for long periods; bend, twist, stoop, and or perform other repetitive motions; lift 25 lbs. and follow all Food Safety Guidelines. Assemble boxes in an efficient, organized, and logical manner as needed. Fold flat sheets of cardboard into boxes. Stack boxes in an organized manner. Sustain enough assembled boxes to keep up with demand as directed by supervisor. Maintain a clean work area by picking up, sweeping, and discarding the small plastic and cardboard pieces that fall from the boxes. Feed supply lines with boxes in a timely and organized fashion to maintain a steady supply. Retrieve empty boxes from pallets by hand and place them on a stage shelf above the boxing table.
