Job Duties:
A Foaling Assistant provides support during the birthing process of mares, ensuring the health and safety of both the mare and the foal. This role requires knowledge of equine reproduction, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly in emergencies. Below is a detailed description of responsibilities and qualifications: Key Responsibilities: Pre-Foaling Care: Applicants must monitor pregnant mares closely for signs of impending labor. Maintain a clean and safe foaling environment, including stalls or designated foaling areas. Prepare and organize foaling supplies and equipment. Record and report observations about the mare’s condition to the manager or veterinarian. Assisting During Foaling: Applicants observe mares during labor to identify signs of distress or complications. Assist with the delivery process as needed, ensuring the proper positioning of the foal. Clear the foal’s airways and ensure it begins breathing promptly after birth. Provide initial care for the foal, including drying, disinfecting the umbilical cord, and ensuring colostrum intake. Post-Foaling Care: Applicants monitor the mare and foal for any signs of health issues. Ensure the foal stands, nurses, and passes meconium within expected timeframes. Collect and inspect the placenta to verify its completeness and health. Administer basic medical care under the guidance of a veterinarian or manager. Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of foaling dates, times, and observations. Document any complications or medical interventions. General Barn Duties: Clean and maintain foaling stalls or pastures. Handle mares and foals gently to ensure their safety and comfort. Assist with other farm tasks such as feeding a grooming mares.
