- Worker is required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of container nursery stock, trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vines, and cactus. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm/nursery work/irrigation/crop production.
Job duties will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach, and operate farm/nursery implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm/nursery machinery; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm/nursery grounds; climb in and out of tall trucks and various truck beds and/or trailers; work with augers, gas motors, generators and electrical cords; watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure proper machine operation; adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions; use mechanized or hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning tools, shears, knives, saws, ladders, etc.; mix/spray/apply chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, and other plant related treatments (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable) by hand or machine; pick up/handle/climb ladders; lift items such as rolls of plastic, bundles of wire, and rolls of drip tape overhead; identify, trap, poison pests; maintain/repair fencing; repair/maintain farm structures/grounds; perform general clean-up of farm/nursery areas and worksites; collect fallen debris/product into piles using rake; lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies; install/remove plastic coverings; carry and position work aids; stand on the ground, ladders, or elevated platforms; load/unload product/containers/pallets onto or off of trucks/wagons/trailers/field conveyors by hand or with a forklift/tractor; alert equipment operator of equipment clogging/malfunctions and aid operator in correct machine performance; report mechanical problems to farm mechanic and/or supervisor; prepare fields, seed beds, containers, plastic growing beds, etc.; hand plant trees, vines, and/or plants in fields, nursery, and/or containers; use tools to dig holes to plant young trees; mix planting soil; propagate plants; shear trees; walk behind equipment to ensure plant placement (unclog planter if necessary); plant transplants with machine or by hand; observe general condition and inspect crops/plants/trees for signs of disease/insect manifestations/worms/rot and apply appropriate care; remove dead plants; move containerized plants/vines/trees; identify and remove product that is misshapen, damaged, or inferior; prune/thin plants/vines/trees using a variety of hand and/or mechanized pruning equipment; prune and thin from ground, ladder, or motorized platform; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers; stake and tie plants/vines/trees; wrap tree trunks; load/unload trucks and product from conveyor belt; attach hangers to baskets and hang throughout holding houses; tie/position trees and plants by tying or wrapping as necessary; pack, label, tag, pull, sort, and store plants by variety; prepare plants/vines/trees to fill orders; fill and label trays and move product to/from greenhouses and loading/unloading areas; stoop over plants; gather crop by hand or machine; repeatedly catch and throw crops weighing up to 30 pounds; lift crops weighing approximately 80 pounds; hand crop off to, or receive from, another worker for placement into containers or onto trailers/wagons/trucks/conveyors; place product on designated conveyors; install/remove plastic roofs and sides on greenhouses; install/remove shade structures over crops; prepare crops for shipment;
