Job Description

Full Time:
Yes
Number of Workers Requested:
4
Job Duties:
Primary work will be to assist in pastured poultry operation under the supervision of farm managers and owners. The workers will assist in all aspects of raising poultry from brooders in field shelters and then processing poultry for slaughter and packaging. All operations are on the farm and are only the poultry products from the farm. Poultry production includes feeding, watering, catching, and moving fowl from brooder to field and from field to processing, cleaning brooder facilities, maintaining infrastructure, and field shelters. Tractors and trucks will be used to move field shelters and feed infrastructure. Tasks also include taking care of brooders (early morning and late evening checks). Workers will also perform poultry processing tasks including cleaning, slaughtering, dressing, and packaging which means use of knives to make cuts, debone and grind meat, separate and prepare viscera, apply labels, and record weights. Workers will keep the facility clean per LDAF/USDA inspection specifications. This work will include slaughter cones and blood, scalder and plucker equipment, table floor tanks, and restroom facilities. Workers will also handle Offal for composting/disposal. Pastured poultry production is not year-round because it is based on seasonal weather conditions optimal for raising poultry outdoors. Because of the nature of poultry production, the workers' daily schedule will vary. On some days, the workday will be divided with early morning to mid-morning tasks, there will be a midday break, followed by afternoon and evening tasks. Other days it will require a full day, up to 12 hours. There will also be some Saturday and Sunday work required. Workers will be given 1 hour for lunch and a 15-minute break in the morning and in the afternoon. Beginning and ending times may vary depending on weather and time of year. Because the tasks and chores associated with poultry do not always take 8-hours/day, there will be other tasks to perform. This will include caring for pastured pigs, egg layers, market vegetable gardening, nursery, firewood production, occasional cattle work, and general property management. For pigs, feed, maintain water infrastructure, clean out water troughs, weed-eat, clean electric fences, and handle and unload pigs for transport. For egg layers, feed, water, and move egg layer field shelter and infrastructure, and gather, package, and wash eggs. For market vegetables, shovel, haul, and spread manure. Dig holes, ditches, and trenches. Till soil and apply compost and organic fertilizers. Transplant. Thin and prune crops. Apply organic approved herbicides and pesticides. Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables and plants, horticulture specialties, and field crops. Hoe weeds in fields. May be required to do some incidental record keeping or spot-picking or clipping, including pulling weeds by hand or using a mechanical planter. Drive tractor and hook up tractor implements. Use hand tools such as shovels, trawls, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. Cut produce and place in containers, then on wagon in field. May place plant stake and zip tie in larger vegetable/plant containers. Remove weeds from containers. Pick, wash, sort, and grade assorted vegetable plants. Water plants and replace hoses in sheds. May move vegetable containers from one part of farm to another. Clean and organize greenhouses and sheds after use. Help maintain, construct, destruct, repair, and cover trellises, fences, and farm buildings. For firewood production, cut, split, bundle, and transport firewood to on-farm store. Use and maintain power tools. For cattle production, assist with building, maintaining, and repairing cattle fences, and with working, sorting, and loading cattle.
