Job Duties:
This job requires a minimum of three months of prior experience working in a nursery handling both manual and machine tasks associated with nursery production. Workers must be able to perform all duties of entry level workers as well as perform additional mechanized tasks with accuracy and efficiency. Applicants must be able to furnish verbal or written statement establishing relevant prior work experience. Must be able to lift/carry 70 lbs. Employer-paid post-accident drug testing required of foreign and domestic workers. Plant, cultivate, and harvest horticultural commodities including trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials. Workers will perform activities including but not limited to planting, digging, mulching, transplanting, mowing, and watering in nurseries and seasonal holding houses. Fertilize, prune, spray, space, water, tag, and perform other plant maintenance. Count and inventory plants. Propagate or graft plants from cuttings. Load finished product onto wagons and trucks. Work may include incidental installation of plants or trees at customer locations within the metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Assist with building, covering, and uncovering seasonal holding houses. Plant and dig field-grown plants, burlap roots, perform general maintenance of field grown nursery stock. Fill, lift, and carry various sized pots with soil and plants weighing as much as 70 pounds. Plants must be handled carefully so that minimal leaves, limbs, and roots are broken during transplanting process. Workers may be required to perform variable tasks such as irrigation, ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, weeding, and other general farming tasks. Work may also include mechanized field work using power equipment, including but not limited to tractors, planters, sprayers, cultivators, forklifts, skid steers, and other equipment. Workers will be expected to operate agricultural equipment with or without direction. Workers must have an understanding of nursery quality control standards and a working knowledge of nursery production procedures. Workers must be able to work on teams as well as unsupervised. Workers may hand mix water soluble fertilizer and must know fertilizer reaction to various varieties of plants. Workers will measure water stress level of plants and must have knowledge in water management for disease prevention. Workers with appropriate license and a valid doctor's certificate may be asked to drive company vehicles such as light farm pickup trucks. Work requires repetitive movement and extensive walking over long periods. Workers are expected to perform duties including boxing, weighing and loading of product. Workers will assist in loading trucks with packaged product weighing up to and including 70 pounds and lifting to a height of 5 feet for long periods of time. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray, etc. may affect workers' ability to perform the job. Workers are exposed to wet weather early in the morning through the heat of the day. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work in occasional rain showers not severe enough to cease outdoor operations. Qualified workers with disabilities should notify the employer of any accommodations needed to perform the job. Workers must be physically able to perform the work required, with or without reasonable accommodations. A worker is not eligible if the worker is unable to perform the job duties even with the requested accommodation, or if the employer is not reasonably able to accommodate (i.e., because doing so would cause undue hardship on business operations).
