- Job Duties:
- Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. General Field & Fence Maintenance: Clearing ground of rocks, sticks, and roots by hand, clear brush and trees with chain saw. Workers may dig ditches with shovels, cut plants with knives, pull weeds by hand or using hand tools. Use wood to build and repair boxes for digger. Drain water from fields with hand tools and shovels when needed. The workers may use or operate the following tools and equipment: skid loader, digger, nail gun, power washer, drill, staple gun, knives, hoes, shovels, and other tools associated with planting and harvesting sweet potatoes and general farm labor. Workers may also operate the following agricultural equipment: forklift, 2 row digger, and tractor pulling implements for sweet potato harvesting. Workers may be asked to help change oil, air filters, and grease. May be asked to clean and put up all equipment when not in use as well as clean/sweep storage buildings when not in use. Potato Bedding: May drive regular pickup trucks, tractor (with guidance), disk DMI, chizzle, plows, rolling packer, buggy for laying sweet potatoes, skid steer for dumping potato in buggy, dirt cover, fertilizer roller, plastic machine, and shovels. Readying Ground for Planting Corn and Soybeans: May use tractors with guidance. May also use disk, doall, dmi, harrow, orthman (to make rows or rollder bedder), plant with planters, fill seed tender, lay by rig use of chemicals with sprayer, water wagon, and ditcher. Hand tools may be used to work on equipment as well as painting, servicing tractors, and changing oil and filters. May pull grain cart for soybean and corn. Planting Sweet Potatoes: Covering potatoes with plastic. Cut slips by hand with knife, place in boxes to load and unload onto trucks. Dip potato slips. Walk behind potato trans planter and fill in slips by hand. Riding mechanical trans planter and loading slips in planting cups. Divining plants by hand. May clean potato shed/storage (located on farm). Workers may be asked to operate the following agricultural equipment: forklift, 2 row digger, 8 row transplanter, and tractor pulling implements for planting sweet potatoes and general farm labor. Safety training for use of farm equipment and tractors will be provided. May use pickup to pull plants to field. May use tractors (with guidance) to cut ground with disk, doall, incorporate chemicals with dmi, spray boom, chizzles. Will row up ground with hippers or orthman drive setters. Plow potatoes in the summer with middle plows or rolling cultivators, spray, pull weeds, and build boxes. Harvesting Sweet Potatoes: Use of mechanical digging equipment to dig potatoes. May harvest sweet potatoes by hand with use of buckets. Must be able to sort, grade, and pack potatoes by size, quality, or type. Load and unload boxes on trucks, trailers, or sweet potato harvesters. Check, maintain, and clean all hand tools and mechanical equipment prior to and after use. Build or make minor repairs to existing barns or potato shed. May operate skid loader to load and unload trucks and trailers. May be asked to run combine to help move header with pickup as well as service combine by cleaning filters every day. May be asked to fill/pull water wagon and spray/water potatoes. May be asked to transport workers to/from housing, fields, grocery stores, etc.
