Job Duties:
Crops/Commodities: nursery stock. First-line supervision and coordination of agricultural workers. Under the direction of farm management, assign tasks and monitor crop production operations. Train workers in techniques such as planting, cultivating, or harvesting and in use of safety measures. Train workers in safe equipment operation. Take directions from managers on work schedules, production requirements, and conditions of equipment and supplies. Maintain details of personnel actions. Operate employer's electronic time keeping system. First-line supervisors do not have direct hiring or firing authority, but may be asked by farm management to give warnings or take disciplinary action against works for safety or work rule violations. General Farm Labor: Some of the work required from the worker to be performed that is incidental to farming crops listed in this application may be described as performing hand cultivation duties, planting crops, transplanting (may include riding on a transplant machine), cutting spears and sorting, weeding or hoeing crops, cleaning, repairing seed beds and racks, setting up and moving irrigation pipes and equipment. Tasks the worker must be able to perform include: assist in pest controls; install culverts for field drainage; remove and reinstall sprinklers, remove debris, boxes, and discarded plants from fields to keep clean growing areas; general ranch maintenance; basic irrigation maintenance; clean and maintenance equipment and tools, assist in equipment cleaning, assist in applications by hand or tractor of fertilizers and or/pesticides; frost control of sprinklers, frost blanket coverings, or hoop coverings. May be necessary to assist in the use of farm equipment such as tractors, trucks and harvest machinery, etc. Weeding: Workers will remove weeds by use of a hoe/pickaxe from the walk-way and remove all weeds growing around plants by hand. Workers will remove weeds from the growing area by raking piles of debris and dispose of it as directed by the farm manager and or/crew supervisor. Perform general maintenance of field grown plants. Performs any other duties involved in the maintenance of plant materials and nursery stock and maintenance of holding yards and shipping areas. Manual tasks related to the growing of nursery stock will include some combination of the following: Plant, cultivate and maintains in condition for shipping and resale to customers, pot seedlings, prune, space, irrigates and culls plants to ensure availability of marketable products. Prepare fields for planting by clearing cull stock, brush and debris; propagate plants from cuttings; plant cuttings, seedlings or 'liners' by hand (including potting machine, riding and inserting liners in a mechanical planter); dig, load, unload or transplant bare-root nursery stock; straighten, tie, stake, prune and shear trees and shrubs (shearing conifers and evergreens must be performed with proper taper and angle of bud cut for quality); cut, pull, use string trimmer to remove and mow weeds or grass (weeds are to be removed by the root and not at ground level); assist with irrigation; spread topsoil and mulch. Transplant trees, shrubs and plants into containers; fill, lift and carry various size pots with soil and plants weighing as much as 50 pounds (plants must be handled carefully so that minimal leaves, limbs and roots are broken during transplanting process); water in nursery and seasonal holding houses and when potting; cover seasonal holding houses with plastic in fall using staple gun and nailing lathe; remove plastic from seasonal holding houses in spring assist with building seasonal holding houses; move irrigation equipment; spray herbicides and insecticides and apply fertilizer, hand hoe around nursery stock.

Special Requirements:
This job requires a minimum of 6 months of agricultural experience working in a greenhouse overseeing crews handling mechanized and manual tasks. Crew supervisors are responsible for overseeing that farmworkers perform manual tasks with accuracy and efficiency. Applicants must be able to furnish verbal or written statement establishing relevant prior work experience. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. Employer-paid post-hire drug testing required. Criminal background check required. Workers must have either a U.S. CDL license with a Class B and Passenger Endorsement or a Mexican CDL - Digital Mexican License with A and B Endorsements. Must be eligible to apply for a Farm Labor Contractor Employee certificate within 30 days of hire.
