- Workers may be required to perform any of the following jobs most of which are outside:
Nursery: Workers may be required to perform any combination of the following duties (all of which are outside) concerned with preparing soil and growth media, cultivation, and otherwise participating in horticultural activities such as: haul, spread, dig, rake, and mix media to prepare the growing areas for production; cover and fill cold frames and greenhouses in preparation for planting; hauling, planting, spraying, weeding, watering, pruning, trimming, shaping and spacing products. Worker may fertilize with granular or liquid fertilizer; tie, bunch, wrap, and pack trees and/or shrubs to fill orders and load onto trucks for market. Workers may work on the potting line, in a greenhouse, or in an outdoor production area transplanting seedlings and liners into containers and place in designated growing area.
Planting: Workers may be required to work as operators of wheel tractors pulling planters and planting wagons as an incidental activity to planting. Workers may be required to work on the ground planting trees and shrubs that are fed through a tractor pulled planter-using shovels. Workers will be required to dig trees and shrubs.
Pruning: When pruning, it is vital to prune the unwanted branch while protecting the stem or trunk wood of the tree/shrub. While pruning trees and shrubs, workers will receive proper tools for the particular job, i.e. - saw, prunes and had snips. These tools will be returned to the employer at the end of the task. The cost of the tools destroyed maliciously or lost carelessly will be deducted from the workers’ wages. The supervisor will set a standard or pattern for each orchard and will demonstrate and communicate this to workers. Workers will be assigned rows of trees and must prune each tree according to the predetermined standard, Workers must remove all resulting material from the trees rendered from performing pruning tasks. When pruning is complete on each tree, each worker is required to rake and scatter the resulting brush in the center of the tractor/equipment rows.
Azaleas and Shrubs: Workers will be working with azaleas, and shrubs. Workers will plant, cultivate, harvest, propagate, grade, store and ship container and field grown horticultural products. Harvesting field grown crops may include grading and tagging. Some harvesting may require digging up products and placing on pallets. Grading is done by size. Products are measured, tied in bundles and placed in storage for shipment. Workers will harvest seed and/or take cuttings from trees and shrubs, place in containers pre-filled with growing media and transplant cuttings and seedlings to prepared areas. Shrubs and some trees are harvested for resale when they reach approximately1-3 inches in height, although most products must reach approximately 3 feet tall before they are ready for market.
Farm Equipment Operation during Nursery Operations: This includes tractors, forklifts, mowing equipment, weed-eaters, Front-end Loaders, etc. Workers will be required to operate tractors and other farm equipment during nursery operations as an incidental activity for planting, cultivating, harvesting, installing and support jobs of the crops. Operate mowing equipment (rotary and reel types, punch and riding) or drive a tractor pulling a wagon through the field or between fields. Workers will be required to attach implements to the equipment. Workers will be required to operate all farm equipment according to instructions and in a manner that protects the operator, other workers, crops and equipment. Repeated failure to obey operating ad safety instructions may result in termination. Properly licensed workers will drive farm vehicles on public roads.
